UFC 297 Odds, Prediction: Yohan Lainesse vs. Sam Patterson
Lainesse as a -145 favourite to win on the MMA odds and Patterson is a +120 underdog.
Yohan Lainesse UFC 297 Odds
Leon Edwards is currently the UFC welterweight champion, and the 31-year-old Lainesse, from Quebec, is unranked with a 9-2 record in an MMA career only dating to 2018. He fought in the TKO and CFFC organizations before getting his big break at Dana White’s Contender Series in November 2021 where Lainesse beat Justin Burlinson by first-round TKO (punches) to earn a spot on the roster.
“The White Lion” is 1-2 since and comes off a first-round submission loss (arm-triangle choke) to fellow Canadian Mike Mallott (from Ontario) in February. Lainesse charged forward with about two minutes left in the round, punching to close the distance, but found himself taken down by Malott and that was the beginning of the end. Lainesse tapped out at 4:15 of the round. Malott is on the UFC 297 main card against American Neil Magny.
The 6-foot-1 Lainesse has a reach of 76 inches and his fights average 7:29. He lands 2.34 significant strikes per minute with 42 per cent accuracy and absorbs 3.44 with 59 per cent defence. His takedown average is 1.00 per 15 minutes with 28 per cent accuracy, and his takedown defence is 80 per cent.
Lainesse has six wins by KO/TKO and three by decision with one victory by KO/TKO and one by submission. For Saturday, his favoured method of victory is by KO/TKO/DQ at +130, followed by decision at +650 and submission at +800 with a draw at +6600. To win in Round 1, he’s +160, Round 2 +750 and Round 3 +1600.
Sam Patterson UFC 297 Odds
The 27-year-old Englishman Patterson, a Brave Combat Federation alum, is also unranked in the division with a 10-2-1 career record. This will be his first fight as a welterweight as he has been competing at lightweight.
“The Future” got his UFC break by competing in Dana White’s Contenders Series last September and beat Vinicus Sacchelli Cenci by second-round submission (rear-naked choke) to earn a spot on the roster but was dominated in his debut in March, a first-round KO loss (punches) to Yanal Ashmoz in brutal fashion to snap a nine-fight unbeaten streak that included a draw.
An obviously hurt Patterson tried to climb to his feet against Ashmoz, seemingly unaware the fight had finished, and even appeared grab the referee to keep the bout going as Patterson’s coaches tried to explain that the fight was over. Patterson has largely followed in the footsteps of current UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards in that Edwards stayed in the United Kingdom to train instead of the United States and Patterson has done the same.
The 6-foot-3 Patterson has a reach of 78 inches and his bouts average 5:17. He lands 2.56 significant strikes per minute with 36 per cent accuracy and absorbs 3.98 with 44 per cent defence. His takedown average is 0.00, and his takedown defence is 33 per cent.
Both Patterson losses are via KO/TKO, and he has five wins by submission, four by KO/TKO and one by decision. For Saturday, his favoured method of victory is by submission at +300, followed by KO/TKO/DQ at +450 and decision at +650. To win in Round 1, he’s +375, for Round 2 +500 and Round 3 +900.
That the fight goes the distance is +425 with no at -650. The over-under is 1.5 rounds, with the under a -160 favourite.
