Mackenzie Dern is a -135 favourite to win on the MMA odds with Tecia Torres at +100. The over-under is 2.5 rounds with the over a -190 favourite.

Mackenzie Dern UFC 273 Odds

The women’s strawweight champion is Rose Namajunas and Dern is ranked No. 5 in the division and No. 13 among the women’s pound-for-pound fighters. The 29-year-old was born in the USA but her father is from Brazil, and she’s 11-2 in a pro career dating to 2016. Dern is a former gold medalist in the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships.

Dern is yet to get a title shot in the UFC and probably won’t anytime soon with a loss here. She is coming in off a unanimous decision loss to underdog Marina Rodriguez in October to see a four-fight winning streak snapped. Dern dominated when that fight was on the ground, but she couldn’t bring it there often enough. Rodriguez dominated kept the fight standing up and dominated in that aspect. Dern has received a fight-night bonus in four of her past five UFC appearances.

Dern’s fights average 10:27. She will have a three-inch height advantage and three-inch reach advantage on Torres. Dern lands 3.13 significant strikes per minute with 36 per cent accuracy and absorbs 4.22 with 57 per cent defence. Her takedown average is 0.54 per 15 minutes with 10 per cent accuracy, and her takedown defence is zero per cent.

Dern hasn’t won or lost a fight by KO/TKO. She has seven wins by submission and four by decision. Her four submission victories in UFC strawweight competition are the most in divisional history and her four stoppage victories in UFC strawweight competition ties her with Jessica Andrade for the second-most.

Tecia Torres UFC 273 Odds

Torres is ranked No. 7 in the strawweight division and not among the Top 15 in pound-for-pound. The 32-year-old is 13-5 in a professional career that began in 2012. She made her UFC debut in December 2014 in The Ultimate Fighter 20 Finale with a unanimous decision win over Angela Magana.

After losing four straight fights from 2018 through ’19, the “Tiny Tornado” (she is 5-foot-1) has won three straight. She was last in the Octagon in August and beat Angela Hill by unanimous decision. Torres also beat Hill early in her UFC career in 2015.

Torres’ fights averages 13:38. She averages 4.71 significant strikes per minute with 48 per cent accuracy and absorbs 3.61 with 60 per cent defence. Torres’ takedown average is 0.71 per 15 minutes with 15 per cent accuracy, and her takedown defence is 58 per cent.

We do have one recent common opponent: Marina Rodriguez. As noted above, Dern lost to Rodriguez in her last bout, while Torres lost to Rodriguez by unanimous decision in 2019. Torres has 11 wins by decision and one each by KO/TKO and submission. All five losses are via judges.

This will be Torres’ 15th UFC strawweight bout, the third-most appearances in divisional history behind Angela Hill (19) and Randa Markos (18). Torres’ nine victories in UFC strawweight competition are tied with Carla Esparza for second-most in divisional history behind Joanna Jedrzejczyk (10).
