Cody Garbrandt vs Trevin Jones: UFC 285 Odds, Prediction
Even though their contest will only serve as an appetizer, both fighters have known more victories than defeats. Garbrandt enters the bantamweight bout with a 12-5 tally. Conversely, Trevin Jones’ efforts have earned him a 13-9 record.
There isn’t too great a discrepancy in the odds. Cody Garbrandt sits at -180 on the MMA odds whereas Jones is pinned at +140.

The Ohio native, nicknamed “No Love,” has had topsy-turvy experiences since 2020. A bout with Raphael Assunçao was set for UFC on ESPN 8 in March 2020 but kidney issues forced him to pull out. The pair duked it out at UFC 250 instead, which “No Love” took via a one-punch knockout in the sophomore round. It earned him Performance of the Night honours.
In October 2020 the American had to pull out of UFC 255 for all sorts of unfortunate reasons: COVID infection, brain fog, and pneumonia. His two tilts in 2021 ended in defeat. At UFC Fight Night: Font vs Garbrandt, the latter saw a unanimous decision go against him. A TKO defeat at UFC 269 to Kai Kara-France followed. Whether due to his scheduled opponents nursing injuries or himself, Garbrandt hasn’t fought since then. Even his UFC 285 rival is a replacement, as he was originally set to battle Julio Arce.
He excels at vanquishing opposite numbers by KO/TKO, with 83 per cent of his fights concluding in that fashion. He can land a decent 3.16 significant strikes every 60 seconds, although he receives 4.22 with a defence of 60 per cent. It’s still slightly better than Jones, who takes 4.96. Of note, Garbrandt definitely doesn’t have the same stature as Jones. His reach is only 65.5 to Jones 70, with the leg reach still favouring his opponent 40 to 38.

Hailing from New Orleans (but living in Guam now), the southpaw has also experienced some dramatic turns since 2020, albeit for problems of his own doing. The big story concerns the events of UFC on ESPN: Munhoz vs Edgar in August 2020. Jones was a last-minute replacement for a fight with Timur Valiev. Surprisingly, Jones emerged victorious thanks to a second-round TKO.
However, in October of that year, he was suspended for four and a half months when it was discovered that he had tested positive for marijuana use in the context of the Valiev tilt. As additional punishment his win was overturned. He followed that up with a TKO at UFC 259 over Mario Bautista, then a technical submission defeat at the hands of Saidyokub Kakhramonov in August 2021 at UFC on ESPN: Cannonier vs Gastelum. More defeats spelled a miserable 2022: a unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 203 versus Javid Basharat and another unfavourable judgement at UFC Fight Night 211 against Raoni Barcelos.
His manner of victory is more evenly spread out than Garbrandt’s. 23 per cent are via KO/TKO, 31 per cent courtesy of submissions, and 46 per cent the result of decisions. The significant strikes per minute statistics are alarming, however. We’ve mentioned that he takes more than his rival this Saturday, but he also delivers fewer as well (2.33 to 3.16). His 40 per cent defence also isn’t nearly on par with his opponent’s 60.
