Blue Jays Get a “B” on the Report Card
Just like in any sport, when the halfway mark is around the corner, fans and pundits start handing out mds-session grades to teams. As of Wednesday, June 28, the Toronto Blue Jays have played 80 games (79 when the Pitch Clock episode was recorded). They are 43-37 and sit fourth in the AL East.
Bastl throws the question to former manager John Gibbons. What letter do the Jays get?
“I gotta give them a “B.” People are probably gonna go “’B’, really?”. Look at it this way. They lost the guy who was their ace in Manoah. Vladdy Jr. is having a solid year by most people’s standards, just not his norm, and they’re sitting as we speak in a Wild Card Spot.”
Even co-host David Bastl is a bit surprised by the grade, responding that he’d grade the Blue Jays with a C. To back up “Gibby’s” point, Toronto is duking it out in the most difficult division in the majors and has had to reckon with unexpected turns of events that would have easily derailed many other campaigns.
At the time of publication, Toronto is only 0.5 games behind a Wild Card spot. There is plenty of time to get things back on track, which itself speaks to how good the team was last year. There is no shortage of MLB squads that would love to be in the thick of a race for a Wild Card seed. Things really aren’t that bad in Toronto and there are over 80 games left to improve things. Lest it is forgotten, they also have the second-best lead-off home runner hitter all-time in George Springer.
