MLB Preview: Padres and Giants Headline a Big Weekend

It’s a big weekend in Baseball, especially out in the NL West where Al Dannity expects an epic battle.

Giants need to mind Lincecum’s health The San Diego Padres are enjoying their best season in years but they need a good performance this weekend to keep the dream going. The Padres travel to San Francisco for a three game series, with leadership of the NL West at stake. San Francisco has home advantage but it needs to keep an eye on the health of Tim Lincecum.

The two-time Cy Young winner is on course to throw 3,450 pitches this year, a ferocious amount for a pitcher that lacks the frame of Roy Halladay or Justin Verlander. This is more of a long-term issue for the Giants however and this weekend I see Lincecum being the difference in the match-up. Neither side has impressed much in the last couple of weeks so that makes me think this will be a close series. I like San Diego to win at least one game but with Lincecum pitching on Sunday, the Giants should do enough to win two. Bet on San Francisco to win big with Sports Interaction.

Phillies to finish off Mets Over in the NL East the Phillies have an appointment in New York with the Mets. Philadelphia showed some great heart coming back against the Dodgers on Thursday and I like the Phillies to carry the momentum of that victory into the weekend. The Mets are all but out of the playoff picture and I don’t expect them to provide much of a challenge to a charging Philadelphia.

Rangers ready to step up Texas is in the middle of a testing schedule against the best the AL has to offer. This weekend the Rangers face off against a Boston team that’s fighting to stay in the playoff picture. The Rangers own the AL West but if this team is serious about hanging around in October, then it needs to show it can beat the big boys. I like Texas to take two out of three against the Red Sox.

Yankees and Rays look for big wins The Yankees squeaked out a 4-3 win to start off its series against the Royals in style. The four game set offers the Yankees a chance to get some breathing room at the top of the AL East. The Royals look capable of stealing one win this weekend but otherwise I expect one-way traffic. Look for the Yankees to add two more wins this weekend. The Tampa Bay Rays know they will need to match anything the Yankees do this weekend. The Rays take on the struggling Orioles in a three game set. I like Tampa Bay to sweep Baltimore to keep the pressure on New York at the top of the division.
