MLB Odds: Should the Toronto Blue Jays bring back Max Scherzer?

Spring training is well under way, but free agency still has some intriguing names for teams to consider.

One of those names is future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer, who remains unsigned just a few months after pitching in Game 7 of the World Series.

Does a reunion between Mad Max and the Toronto Blue Jays make sense? Let’s get into it.

Max Scherzer

With the signing of pitchers Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce earlier in free agency, it looked like the door was closed on Scherzer returning to Toronto.

However, with Chris Bassitt signing in Baltimore and Shane Bieber expected to start the season injured, there could still be a fit for Scherzer despite a crowded Blue Jays rotation.

There have reportedly been discussions between the Blue Jays and Scherzer and it seems like there could be a legitimate fit.

Toronto has one of the deepest rotations in the American League on paper with Cease, Ponce, Bieber, Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage and Jose Berrios, but there are still questions.

How will Ponce adjust back to the majors after playing two years in the KBO? When will Bieber be available? Will Yesavage hit a wall in his first full major league season? And what will Berrios bring to the table after leaving the team during last year’s World Series?

To me, all those questions make Scherzer a great depth option at the back of the rotation for some insurance. Scherzer isn’t the All-Star he once was, but Toronto doesn’t need him to be. The team doesn’t need Scherzer to make 30+ starts and provide 200+ strikeouts. They just need him to take the ball when called on and provide a steady veteran presence in the clubhouse.

A reunion between Scherzer and the Blue Jays doesn’t just feel right, it feels inevitable.
