MLB Betting Odds: Miles to start for Blue Jays vs. Cleveland on Tuesday, Arrighetti following in bulk role

The Toronto Blue Jays are making a change ahead of a key series against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday.

Right-hander Spencer Miles will open the game for the Jays, with first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.

Spencer Arrighetti, who was originally slated to start, will follow Miles in a bulk role.

Game 1 vs. Cleveland

Selected by Toronto from the Giants last December in the Rule 5 draft, Miles has posted a solid 2.92 ERA across 83.1 innings in his rookie season.

The 26-year-old has been somewhat of a Swiss Army Knife for the Jays, taking on various roles including opener, bulk pitcher and even high-leverage guy following Jeff Hoffman’s trade to Minnesota.

Miles’ last opening role came in a 3-0 win over Kansas City last Wednesday. He threw two scoreless innings with one strikeout before the bullpen took over.

Arrighetti, on the other hand, has struggled since being acquired from the Houston Astros in the Daulton Varsho trade. The 26-year-old has a 7.36 ERA over 7.1 innings of work in two appearances for Toronto.

Playoff push

This three-game series in Cleveland could make or break the Blue Jays’ final push for the playoffs.

Toronto (68-70) enters Tuesday sitting 1.5 games back of the Guardians for the third and final wild-card spot in the American League, with Baltimore (69-69) and Texas (68-70) also in the running. The Minnesota Twins (66-72), Seattle Mariners (64-74) and Detroit Tigers (63-74) are still alive, but have fallen behind recently.

The rest of the series against Cleveland will see top Cy Young contender Dylan Cease (+145) start Wednesday, followed by Jose Soriano on Thursday.
