Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox: Odds, Prediction
The Red Sox are priced as -145 favourites on the MLB odds.
Blue Jays vs. Red Sox Betting Analysis
Boston might be in the AL East race if it was better at home as the Sox are just 18-20 at Fenway Park, although in their most recent homestand won two of three against both the Phillies and Yankees, two of the best teams in the majors. Following that, the Red Sox went to Toronto and swept three games to start last week, the first time the Jays were swept this season. They were held to exactly three runs in each game.
Good-looking rookie outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela was 5-for-7 in the series with a homer, double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Tyler O’Neill was 4-for-12 with three solo homers and four runs scored. Boston’s best hitter, All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers, was just 3-for-14 with a homer. Justin Turner was 5-for-10 with a solo homer and five runs scored for the Jays in the series. Ernie Clement was 4-for-8 with two RBIs and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 2-for-13.
Toronto was 3-4 at Fenway Park in 2023 but won or tied the season series there the previous three seasons.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Jays enter on a six-game skid and got awful news over the weekend as shortstop Orelvis Martinez was given an 80-game suspension Sunday after testing positive for performance-enhancing substance Clomiphene. The 22-year-old, ranked as the team’s No. 2 overall prospect, said in a statement that he had been prescribed a fertility drug by a doctor in the Dominican Republic during the offseason that resulted in the positive test. Martinez only made his big-league debut on Friday in Cleveland and went 1-for-3. He would have gotten a fair amount of playing time with Bo Bichette on the injured list. Outfielder Daulton Varsho is day-to-day as he didn’t start Sunday with some back tightness. Righty Chris Bassitt starts on the hill Monday. He comes off his seventh quality start of the year, allowing two runs and seven hits over six innings last Tuesday vs. Boston in a no-decision. Bassitt is 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA in four career starts vs. the Red Sox. Rafael Devers has had success against him, going 5-for-11 with two doubles and two homers.
Boston Red Sox
The Sox finished a six-game trip through Toronto and Cincinnati at 5-1 with Sunday’s 7-4 victory. That’s four straight series wins for Boston, which is a season high six games above .500 and with MLB’s fourth-best record since May 19. The Red Sox lead the American League with 78 stolen bases and haven’t led the AL in that category since 1935. Outfielder Wilyer Abreu was activated off the injured list Saturday and went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored but then was off Sunday for matchup reasons. Right-hander Tanner Houck is having a career season at 7-5 with a 2.14 ERA and is scheduled on the mound Monday. He took a no-decision last Tuesday vs. the Jays, allowing two earned over 5.2 innings. Houck hasn’t personally lost since May 15 and has given up more than three earned just once in 2024. He is 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA in 25.1 career innings against Toronto. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is 3-for-12 off him with a double and three RBIs.
