Yankees Suffer Set Back with Judge Toe Injury

Aaron Judge, who apparently was on the road to recovery just recently, spoke to the media this past Saturday with some bad news. He has a rare toe ligament tear and there is no specific timetable for his return to action. What does “Gibby” make of the situation and what it means for the New York Yankees 2023 campaign?

“If he’s not back for the end of the year, and things are getting dicey already, I don’t think they have a chance. The team isn’t as good with him out of the lineup, obviously. He’d make any team better. It would be like taking Mike Trout or Shohei Ohtani out of your lineup.”

In the worst case scenario – next to Judge missing the rest of the season – John Gibbons suggests pinch runners in case he can actually get on base.

Aaron Judge won the AL MVP in 2022, hitting 311 and crushing a record 62 home runs. It was the most by a centre field player in MLB history.

His absence is sorely felt on the stats sheet in 2023. As of June 29, the Yankees are 28th in batting average (.228), 29th in on base percentage (.296), and 18th in runs batted in (329). Impressively, they rank fifth in home runs with 113. New York sits in third place in the AL East at 43-36, 9.5 games out of first place but still in the thick of the race for a Wild Card spot.

Aaron Judge was initially placed on the injured list June 6 for a contusion and sprained ligament in his big right toe.
