2022 MLB All-Star Game Betting Analysis

Dodger Stadium was originally set to host the All-Star Game in 2020, but there wasn’t one due to the COVID pandemic. The American League has won the Midsummer Classic eight straight times. Last year it was 5-2 from Coors Field in Denver with Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. winning MVP honours. He’s starting this year as well at first base and batting cleanup. Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk is batting ninth.

Per usual, a handful of guys on both sides are unavailable to play due to injury or because they just pitched Sunday, including three-time AL MVP Mike Trout of the Angels, two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper of the Phillies and two AL Cy Young contenders in Houston’s Justin Verlander and the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole. Toronto’s George Springer has opted out of the game due to a nagging elbow injury. Santiago Espinal, Alek Manoah and closer Jordan Romano also made it from the Jays.

American League

Lefty Shane McClanahan, the AL Cy Young favourite, will start on the mound for the American League. Astros manager Dusty Baker wouldn’t commit to whether Angels dual-threat Shohei Ohtani will pitch or not, even though Ohtani was selected both for his pitching and hitting – he’ll leadoff from the designated hitter spot. Baker wanted to start Ohtani on the mound, but Ohtani deferred.

In the lineup, Ohtani is followed by Aaron Judge, (Yankees), Rafael Devers (Red Sox), Guerrero (Blue Jays), Giancarlo Stanton (Yankees), Byron Buxton (Twins), Tim Anderson (White Sox), Andrés Giménez (Guardians) and Kirk (Blue Jays).

National League

The NL is managed by Atlanta’s Brian Snitker, who chose Dodgers legend and three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw as his starting pitcher. Rather amazingly, it’s first All-Star start for the future Hall of Famer. Miami’s Sandy Alcantara, the Cy Young favourite, was passed over despite having better numbers, but you get why Snitker gave it to Kershaw as sort of a legacy honour. Kershaw becomes the 13th pitcher to start an All-Star Game in his home park and the first since the Nationals’ Max Scherzer at Nationals Park in 2018.

The NL starting lineup is: Ronald Acuña Jr. (Braves), Mookie Betts (Dodgers), Manny Machado (Padres), Paul Goldschmidt (Cardinals), Trea Turner (Dodgers), Willson Contreras (Cubs), Contreras’ brother William (Braves), Joc Pederson (Giants) and Jeff McNeil (Mets).
