Drosselmeyer is 2010 Belmont Stakes Winner
With a wide open and unpredictable Triple Crown this year, the 2010 Belmont Stakes, the longest leg of the Triple Crown at 12 furlongs, was completed in Elmont, NY when Drosselmeyer crossed the finish line, upsetting favorite to win, Ice Box.
The grandstands at Belmont Park were full of spectators as the 3-year-old Win/Place/Show finishers crossed the line, completing the final leg of the Triple Crown. The field today was narrowed to 12 horses after trainer Todd Pletcher recently added one more horse to the card, With Anticipation Stakes and Bourbon Stakes winner, Interactif. The top three finishers for the 2010 Belmont Stakes are Drosselmeyer, Fly Down and First Dude.
Because the field for the 2010 Belmont Stakes lacked both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners, the interest in this year’s Belmont had waned. However, with Drosselmeyer’s exciting win, there are more races in the works with Sports Interaction’s online horse betting available in the racebook.
“It’s a dramatically different race and it impacts the attendance but it won’t impact the handle in a large way,” Todd Pletcher, who trains Super Saver and Belmont entrant Interactif, said before the race. “You can see by the 12 entries it’s still a big race and a race a lot of people will want to win. There is no substitute for a horse running for the Triple Crown. That becomes one of sports biggest events, not horse racing’s biggest events.”
