2018 Preakness Stakes: Odds, Post Positions and Predictions
In true Triple Crown style, all eyes will be on Justify at this year’s Preakness Stakes. If he wins it, and he’s a favorite to do just that, then the public’s interest in horse racing will be peaked as he takes his Triple Crown quest into the final jewel race – the Belmont Stakes. Justify made history with his win at Churchill Downs, becoming the first horse since Apollo in 1882 to win the Derby having had no racing experience as a two-year-old. His victory at the Kentucky Derby was decisive, winning by two-and-a-half lengths in terrible, wet track conditions.
Sports Interaction’s Preakness Stakes Betting Odds
This year’s Preakness features an eight-horse field for the first time since 2015, when American Pharoah won the second leg of the Triple Crown on his path to winning the first Triple Crown since Affirmed did it in 1978. American Pharoah was trained by Bob Baffert, who is also the trainer of Justify. At 9 and a half furlongs, Preakness is the shortest of the Triple Crown events, and is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
2018 Belmont Stakes Horse Odds
Here’s the full field and post positions:
Post 1 – Quip (16-1)
Trainer: Rodolphe Brisset
Jockey: Florent Geroux
Quip actually qualified for the Kentucky Derby, but his trainers decided to rest him up for the Preakness. He’s the winner of the Tampa Bay Derby.
Post 2 – Lone Sailor (25-1)
Trainer: Tom Amoss
Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr
Lone Sailor, who was sired by Majestic Warrior, a son of A.P. Indy, placed eighth at the Kentucky Derby.
Post 3 – Sporting Chance (22-1)
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey: Luis Contreras
Sporting Chance was fourth at the Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs on Derby day, but has never run a race as long as Preakness.
Post 4 – Diamond King (12-1)
Trainer: John Servis
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Diamond King is one of the best long shots in the Preakness this year. He’s the winner of the Federico Tesio Stakes and his jockey, Javier Castellano, won the Preakness last year.
Post 5 – Good Magic (7-2)
Trainer: Chad Brown
Jockey: Jose Ortiz
Good Magic is the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and he had a good showing at the Kentucky Derby, where he was runner-up to Justify.
Post 6 – Tenfold (25-1)
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Jockey: Victor Espinoza
Even though Tenfold did not race as a 2-year-old (to be fair, neither did Justify) and missed getting into the Kentucky Derby, he has a three-time Preakness winner as his jockey.
Post 7 – Justify (2-5)
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Jockey: Mike Smith
The 2018 Kentucky Derby winner is the favorite to win again in Baltimore this weekend. Trainer Bob Baffert’s horses have won the Preakness six times, and he expects Justify to bring that total to seven. Justify has proven he can win, even in less-than-ideal track conditions.
Post 8 – Bravazo (20-1)
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey: Luis Saez
Bravazo was the third longest shot at the Kentucky Derby a few weeks ago, but surprised everyone by placing sixth in that race. Ownder D. Wayne Lucas is running two horses at Preakness, Sporting Chance being his other entry.
