2011 Breeders' Cup Winner is Drosselmeyer
Louisville, Kentucky – The winner of the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic is Drosselmeyer finishing the 15-race Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which was run over two days at Churchill Downs. The 1 1/4-mile race culminated in a field of 12, with top three finishers at the Breeders Cup Classic being: Drosselmeyer, Game on Dude and Ruler on Ice.
This is great for trainer Bill Mott, who won the Ladies’ Classic and the Classic this year.
The grandstands at Churchill Downs were full of spectators as the Win/Place/Show thoroughbreds crossed the line in the 1 1/4-mile Breeders Cup Classic. The field today saw 12 horses compete for the $5 million purse. Atop Drosselmeyer, Mike Smith beat out his ex-girlfriend, jockey Chantal Sutherland, who finished second atop Game on Dude.
With Drosselmeyer’s exciting win and jockey Mike Smith riding, there are more races in the works with Sports Interaction’s online horse betting available in the online racebook.
Favorite Uncle Mo, winner of the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year, but came down with a liver problem that scratched him from the Kentucky Derby, didn’t place.
Meanwhile second favorite to win, Havre de Grace, who can become the third straight female, following Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, to earn Horse of the Year didn’t fare well either. Harve de Grace was entered in the Breeders’ Cup Classic rather than Friday’s Ladies’ Classic because trainer, Larry Jones wanted to “chase the money” with a filly that had already earned more than $2 million.
“We have a very special horse; we wanted her to be in a position to be considered for horse of the year,” Jones said. “We have to give her that chance to earn it. We’re going after the biggest money possible.”
In other Breeders’ Cup news, opening the exciting day of races, Afleet Again, a 41-1 longshot ridden by Corenlio Velasquez, won the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon. Wrote captured the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf , becoming the first European-based horse to win at the world championships. And filly Royal Delta won the $2 million Ladies Classic.
In the Breeders’ Cup Mile, in a thrilling photo finish, 64-1 longshot Court Vision took the win by a nose edging out Turallure, who made a last-minute sprint. Court Vision was the second-largest payout in Breeders’ Cup history. Meanwhile, favorite Goldkiova came in third but faced disqualification after she fouled Courageous Cat.
