The 2022 Valspar Championship: PGA Tour Betting Odds
Justin Thomas is favoured on the golf odds.
Being honest, it’s a somewhat watered-down field this week because the Valspar is stuck between two must-play events: Last week’s Players Championship across the state outside Jacksonville and next week’s WGC-Match Play in Texas.
Innisbrook Golf Resort’s Copperhead Course, located northwest of Tampa and north of St. Petersburg in Palm Harbor, is a par 71 at 7,340 yards and players love it because it’s hilly with many trees unlike most Florida tracks. Accuracy off the tee is crucial. The signature holes are Nos. 16-18, also known as the “Snake Pit” – Copperhead Course, get it?
Whether it’s windy or not will very much determine the winning score. In 2019 (the 2020 tournament was canceled), it was 8-under 276. Last year, it was 17-under 267 by American Sam Burns. He and Keegan Bradley were tied after 36 and 54 holes and through 12 on Sunday when Burns took control thanks to a Bradley double bogey on No. 13. Burns finished three up on Bradley for his first PGA Tour win; Burns dominated the par-5 first hole by playing it in 6 under overall. Burns has since won again, taking the Sanderson Farms Championship back in October. He is +2500 to repeat.
While three players have won this event twice – it debuted in 2000 – the only repeat winner is Paul Casey in 2019. Aussie Cameron Smith, who won the delayed Players Championship on Monday (and a cool $3.6 million US), is among those not playing this week.
The Valspar Championship Golf Odds
Justin Thomas is the +1000 favourite off a T33 at the Players Championship as the defending champion. Thomas’ best result at this tournament is T10 and he was T13 last year. World No. 2 Collin Morikawa (+1200) is the highest-ranked player in the field, and he had a shot to get the No. 1 ranking at the Players Championship but missed the cut in a surprise. It’s his first time in this event.
Viktor Hovland is also +1200 with Dustin Johnson +1400, Xander Schauffele at +1800, and Louis Oosthuizen, Paul Casey and Tyrell Hatton all +2000. Hovland was T9 at the Players and T3 in his debut here last year. Johnson has a best finish here of T6 in 2019 and comes off a T9 at the Players as well after a blazing final-round 63. As mentioned above, Casey has won here twice. Schauffele missed the cut at the Players and makes his debut here. Oosthuizen has a few Top 10s at this event, including a runner-up in 2019. Hatton missed the cut in his lone visit here.
Canadian Adam Hadwin got his lone PGA Tour win at Copperhead in 2017, shooting 14-under 270, and he’s the only lone Canadian winner of the tournament. Corey Conners was the top finisher last year at T21 with Michael Gligic T29. Hadwin, Mackenzie Hughes, David Hearn, Roger Sloan and Nick Taylor missed the cut. Hadwin is +6600 this week with Hughes +6600, Taylor +15000, Adam Svensson +15000 and Sloan +40000. Hadwin was the top Canadian at the Players with a T9.
The Valspar Championship Golf Predictions
Take Hadwin and Morikawa for Top 10s, but the winner is Oosthuizen as his worst finish in his past four trips to Copperhead is T16.
