Bryson DeChambeau is the favourite on the golf odds.

The last time the Masters was not held in April was in 1939 when it was played in March. Since 1945, the Masters has always been played during the second weekend of April. The azaleas are blooming and it’s the first true sign of spring for golf fans living in cold-weather locales.

Of course, the coronavirus changed this golf year so instead of the Masters being the first major of the year, it’s the last – yet technically it’s part of the 2020-21 wraparound schedule so there will be two Masters (and consecutively).

No one can be sure if Augusta National will play vastly different from early April to early November. This writer has read that it’s likely to play longer. It’s about 10 degrees cooler on average in that area of the country in the fall from the spring. Average rainfall is about the same. The days are shorter this time of year. Tee times will be moved earlier on the weekend for TV reasons as CBS has Alabama-LSU to show on Saturday evening and an NFL game in the 4 p.m. ET widow Sunday.

There will be no fans in attendance for the first time since the tournament was first staged in 1934. The Masters has the smallest field of the major championships (94 scheduled to play this week) as there are no Monday qualifiers or alternates. Augusta National is a par 72 at 7,475 yards.

One of the biggest sports stories in 2019 was Tiger Woods memorably winning the Masters for a fifth time nearly 11 years after his previous major championship win. Woods finished at 13-under 275, one shot ahead of fellow Americans Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele. Italy’s Francesco Molinari had a two-shot lead after 54 holes but shot a final-round 74. Woods had never come from behind after 54 holes to win a major.

Tiger’s next victory will be No. 83 overall on the PGA Tour, which would break a record with Sam Snead. You know Woods wants to do that at Augusta. Only Jack Nicklaus has won more Masters (six) or majors overall (15). Tiger is +3000 to become the first golfer in history to win the Masters in back-to-back years twice.

DeChambeau, who could overpower Augusta with his incredible length of the tee, is +749 to win his first green jacket but second major in a row after claiming the rescheduled U.S. Open in September. His best finish here was T21 in 2016. The last player to win back-to-back majors was Jordan Spieth in 2015.

Johnson, the world No. 1, is +900 as he looks for a first Masters title. Jon Rahm is +1000 with Rory McIlroy +1100 and Justin Thomas +1200. None of them have won here – McIlroy is trying for the career Grand Slam. Phil Mickelson, 50, has won the Masters three times and is +6500 to become the oldest-ever winner of the event.

Arguably the biggest golf moment in Canadian history was left Mike Weir winning the 2003 Masters in a playoff over Len Mattiace. George Knudson was one of three runners-up in 1969 to George Archer. Corey Conners was the low Canadian last year at T46 (even par). Weir missed the cut.

Four Canadiens will play this time, the most the country has had in the Masters. Conners is +15200, Adam Hadwin +24000, Nick Taylor +40000 in his first Masters and Weir +90900.

The 2020 Masters Golf Predictions

Rahm is the winning pick for his first major title at +1000. He has been Top 10 at Augusta the past two trips and comes off a T2 in his most recent PGA Tour event, the Zozo Championship. Three other players from Spain have combined for five Masters wins. The only country with more is the USA (61).
