Sentry Tournament of Champions: PGA Tour Betting Odds
World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is the -600 favourite on the golf odds.
Usually, this tournament is only open to winners from the previous calendar year on the PGA Tour. However, because the schedule was much shorter in 2020 due to the coronavirus shutdown, an additional group of players who didn’t have a victory but did reach the Tour Championship in the FedExCup playoff are also eligible.
Twenty-eight players earned their way in with a victory last year, including six first-timers. Some guys, for whatever reason, simply choose not to play in Hawaii, though. Tiger Woods for example. There is no cut.
The Plantation Course at the Kapalua Resort has hosted since 1999 and is an unusual par 73 measuring nearly 7,600 yards. Winds will be a factor, but the scores are going to be very low. Last year, 14 under was the winning score and that was the worst score to win since 2007.
Americans have won the tournament the vast majority of times, including the past 10. Most top Europeans who also play on the European Tour don’t come over to the PGA Tour until late January.
2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions Odds
Johnson closed 2020 by not finishing worse than tied for sixth in his final seven events, including a victory at the rescheduled Masters. DJ has won this tournament twice, by a whopping eight strokes in 2018 and by four in 2013.
Justin Thomas is +650. He also has won here twice and is the defending champion. Thomas beat fellow Americans Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele in a 2020 playoff. On the third playoff hole, Thomas hit an approach to 3 feet for an easy birdie putt to eliminate Reed, who had two putts on the 18th in the playoff to win. It was the first three-man playoff since the event moved to Kapalua in 1999. Schauffele was eliminated after the first hole when he three-putted from 100 feet.
Thomas also won in 2017 when he finished at 22-under 270 to beat out Hideki Matsuyama by three. Thomas will look to join five other golfers who won this tournament at least three times – Jack Nicklaus leads with five victories. Schauffele (+1000) was the 2019 champion at 23 under, one up on Gary Woodland. Reed (+1600) won in 2015 in a playoff over Jimmy Walker.
Jon Rahm (+750) has finished in the Top 10 here in all three trips but yet to win. The best finish for big-hitting Bryson DeChambeau (+900) is seventh.
The one Canadian winner of this event was Stan Leonard back in 1958 when it was held in Las Vegas. Corey Conners was the lone Canadian in the field last year and finished T19 at 2 under. Conners isn’t in the field this time. Mackenzie Hughes is +10000 to win in his tournament debut and Nick Taylor +25000. He was 29th in this event in 2015, his lone trip.
Sentry Tournament of Champions Predictions
Take Johnson and Thomas for Top 10s but the winner is Matsuyama at +1600. He hasn’t been worse than fourth in three visits but yet to win.
