PGA Tour RSM Classic: Golf Odds and Predictions

While this is the final official PGA Tour event of the calendar year, there are still two notable events in Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas starting on Dec. 4 and the Presidents Cup starting Dec. 12 in Australia. The Hero World Challenge is a glorified exhibition with a very small field so the winner doesn’t get the perks of winning a regular Tour event. And the Presidents Cup is a team event held every two years.

RSM Classic Background

The RSM Classic is the last chance for a player to earn entry in the 2020-opening Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. The winner gets a spot if not already qualified. This tournament debuted in 2010 and was helped brought to fruition by World Golf Hall of Famer Davis Love III, whose foundation runs it.  Love III, who annually serves as host, is a resident of the St. Simons Island area in Georgia – a handful of Tour pros live or have residences in that beautiful spot.

The primary course is Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside layout, a par 70 measuring around 7,000 yards at the southern tip of an island. It’s a short, tight track where the winds will be a factor. Entrants also play one of their first two rounds at the par-72 Plantation course. Love and his brother redesigned that course earlier this year.

Americans have won all but once at this tournament – see below for the 2016 winner. Four of the tournaments have gone to a playoff, including last year when Charles Howell III beat Patrick Rodgers after both finished 72 holes at 19-under 263. No player has won here twice.

RSM Classic Favourites

Webb Simpson is the +800 favourite at Sports Interaction. He finished third last year and was runner-up in 2011, losing to fellow American Ben Crane in a playoff. Billy Horschel is +1400 with Matt Kuchar +1800 and Howell III +2000 to repeat. Horschel hasn’t played here since finishing co-runner-up in 2016. Kuchar has a best result of seventh at the tournament. Howell has a few other Top 10s here in addition to his victory a year ago.

Brendon Todd, who has won back-to-back starts on the PGA Tour after a victory in Mexico on Monday morning, is +4500.

Canadian Golfer Odds

Three years ago, Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes, then a rookie, got his first and still only PGA Tour win here, beating Blayne Barber, Horschel, Henrik Norlander and Camilo Villegas in a playoff – easily the largest playoff field in tournament history. Hughes holed an 18-foot par putt from off the green on the third playoff hole in a Monday morning finish to become the first rookie in 20 years to go wire-to-wire for his first PGA Tour victory.

Hughes is +17500 this week. He comes off a missed cut in Mexico. Adam Hadwin, who will play next in the Presidents Cup, is +3500. He hasn’t played the RSM Classic in a few years. Nick Taylor is +10000 as is David Hearn. Taylor comes off a T26 in Mexico and Hearn a T41. Roger Sloan is +17500, and he also missed the cut last week. Michael Gligic is +40000 as he plays here for the first time.

RSM Classic Predictions

Take Howell and Zach Johnson for Top 10s, but the winner is Kevin Kisner at +2800. He has four Top 10s here, including a win in 2015.
