PGA Tour A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier: Odds & Prediction
Before we look at this tournament, there’s one rule change bettors should be aware of for the new PGA Tour season: Instead of the Top 70 and ties making the cuts, it’s now Top 65 and ties. There are 11 tournaments this year on the “fall schedule” before Thanksgiving, the most since the wraparound schedule was introduced a few years ago.
A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier Background
This tournament debuted as the Greenbrier Classic in 2010 and it was notable because Stuart Appleby tied the PGA Tour record (since broken) with a 59 in the final round to win by a stroke. The 2016 tournament was canceled due to devastating flooding in the area. It was renamed A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier last year (in honour of U.S. military involvement at the site in World War II) and Kevin Na shot a 19-under 261 to win by a tournament-record five shots. It was his first win in seven years. These fall events have smaller purses and weaker fields for the most part.
The Old White TPC Course hosts West Virginia’s only major professional sporting event. It had to be restored some after the 2016 flooding. One notable item from the Old White Course: Sam Snead’s last-ever pro hole-in-one was here at No. 18 in 1995. The Old White is around 7,290 yards and plays to a par 70. It’s the first time this tournament is held in September.
A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier Betting Favourites
Bryson DeChambeau and young Viktor Hovland are the +1000 favourites. DeChambeau has played here once and was 14th two years ago. He won his first start of last season at the Shriners. Hovland was a rookie last season and his best result was a fourth in August at the Wyndham Championship.
Jason Kokrak is +1800 with Bubba Watson, Joaquin Niemann and Sungjae Im all +2200. Watson has played here each of the past five years with a best finish of 13th (twice, including last year). Bubba didn’t have a great 2018-19 campaign overall. Kokrak was third last year and Niemann tied for fifth. Im is playing the event for the first time.
Na is +4100 to repeat, which no player has done in this tournament.
Canadian Golfer Odds
No Canadian has won this tournament, but David Hearn was part of four-man playoff in 2015 won by Danny Lee. Hearn is +9000 this week. He was 30th in 2018. Mackenzie Hughes is +10000. He was 13th last year. Nick Taylor is also +10000 with Roger Sloan +12000 and Michael Gligic +32000.
A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier Predictions
The winner is Russell Henley at +3300. He has been Top 10 at this tournament three straight years.
