PGA British Open Increases Purse to $16.5 Million
Not only is there incredible prestige surrounding The Open Championship – popularly known as The British Open – but there is more money at stake starting this year as well. The event’s purse, so to speak, sees an increase from $14 million to $16.5 million. The tournament’s winner will walk away with a cool $3 million.

PGA British Open Increases Prize Money to $16.5 Million
The Open Championship is the oldest event on the tour. This year’s edition from Hoylake, England at Royal Liverpool will be the 151st. It will be held from July 20 to 23. Last year’s winner Cameron Smith earned $2.5 million.
All the majors have raised the amount of prize money available for players. For instance, the U.S. Open has the deepest pockets with $20 million, up from $10 million only a decade ago.
The Masters’ is currently at $18 million (winner takes $3.24) and the PGA Championship at $17.5 million (winner takes $3.15).
Martin Slumbers is CEO of the R&A, the governing body of companies that help organize golf tournaments in Scotland and in other markets. He spoke about the announcement.
“Our aim is to ensure The Open remains at the pinnacle of world golf and we have almost doubled the prize fund since 2016.”
Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and the rest of the pros have even more to play for this year.
