Farmers Insurance Open Background

The Farmers Insurance Open is played at Torrey Pines Golf Club, a public track that is among the favourites among players on the PGA Tour. There’s a North and South course at Torrey Pines. All players play each one over the first 36 holes before the weekend cut.

The South is the more prominent of the two and hosts the final two rounds. It also hosted the memorable 2008 United States Open, which Tiger Woods won on the 19th playoff hole Monday over Rocco Mediate. Woods was basically playing on one leg due to a stress fracture and torn ACL. He wouldn’t win another major tournament until the 2019 Masters. The 2021 U.S. Open will return to Torrey Pines.

The South is a par 72 at around 7,700 yards, while the North is much shorter but still a par 72. This tournament began in 1952 as the San Diego Open and moved to Torrey Pines in 1968. The event record score of 22-under 266 is held by Woods (1999) and George Burns (1987). The winning score can vary wildly depending on winds/weather. It was 21 under last year but in 2016 it took just 6 under.

The record for wins in one PGA Tour event is eight by Sam Snead and Tiger (two tournaments). Woods has eight victories here, but seven in this tournament as the 2008 U.S. Open doesn’t count in that regard. Tiger’s last win here was in 2013. He tied Snead’s Tour record of 82 overall victories last October at the Zozo Championship in Japan, so Tiger could make more history this week. He was T20 last year and is +1100.

Rory McIlroy is the +600 favourite as the Northern Irishman makes his 2020 PGA Tour debut. He tied for fifth last year and would take over as No. 1 in the world with a victory. Spain’s Jon Rahm is +800. He won here in 2017 at 13 under and was T5 last year.

Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele are each +1800. Rose is the defending champion, and he took control early a year ago with a first-round 63. He finished at 21 under and two ahead of Adam Scott. Rose was runner-up last week on the European Tour in Singapore. Schauffele’s best finish here is 25th. He’s from the area.

Canadian Golfer Odds

No golfer from Canada has won the tournament. The late Al Balding, a Toronto native, was second in 1957 and 1961, both times by one shot to Arnold Palmer. Those were the only two times Palmer won the tournament. Graham DeLaet was in a six-man playoff in 2014 but lost out to Scott Stallings.

Mackenzie Hughes (+35000) shot 70 in all four rounds last year to finish as top Canadian at T29. Roger Sloan (+40000) missed the cut. Michael Gligic (+50000) makes his tournament debut.

Farmers Insurance Open Predictions

Take former champion Jason Day and Rose for Top 10s, but the winner is Hideki Matsuyama at +2000. He has improved his result here each of the past three years, including a T3 in 2019.
