It’s the penultimate event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup playoffs and 2017-18 wraparound season this week at the BMW Championship outside Philadelphia.

BMW Championship Background

Only the Top 70 in the FedExCup points advanced to the BMW Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Newton Square, Pennsylvania. The Top 100 (sans two) competed at the Dell Technologies Championship in Boston, which ended on Monday. Six players who were outside the Top 70 jumped in, meaning that six had to fall out. Ryan Moore had the biggest fall, going from 60th in points to 71st. C.T. Pan had the biggest jump, going from 72nd to 33rd. The biggest names to miss out on advancing to the BMW Championship likely were Matt Kuchar, Jimmy Walker, Stewart Cink and Jason Dufner.

Only the Top 30 in points after this week will move on to the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta. Every player in that field would have a mathematical chance of taking the FedExCup and its $10 million prize. Those in the Top 5 at the Tour Championship would automatically win the FedExCup with a victory at East Lake.

Right now, Gary Woodland is at No. 30 with Chez Reavie is sitting at No. 31. Canada’s Adam Hadwin is 47th in the points, moving up five spots last week, but he’ll obviously need a strong finish at the BMW Championship to move on.

Aronimink Golf Club, founded in 1896, is a par 70 measuring 7,237 yards. It’s the course’s first time hosting this tournament (it has some other major events) and it won’t in 2019.

BMW Championship Betting Odds

How can scorching-hot Bryson DeChambeau not be the Sports Interaction favourite this week? He’s now at +1600 despite winning the first two events of these playoffs, only the second player to ever do that. DeChambeau is guaranteed to be first in points at the Tour Championship. DeChambeau finished T33 in this tournament a year ago outside Chicago.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is again the favourite at +900 and remains second in the points. He won this event in 2010 & ’16, both at different courses. DJ was T7 at the Dell Technologies Championship on Monday. Justin Rose, a runner-up to DeChambeau on Monday, is +1200. Rose was also second in this tournament in 2017 and won it in 2011. Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas are each +1400 – Thomas is fifth in the points and Koepka sixth.

Hadwin is +11000 to win the BMW Championship, which no Canadian has. He finished T21 on Monday and T40 in this tournament a year ago. Tiger Woods, who hasn’t played great in these playoffs, is +2200.

BMW Championship Predictions

Always tough to handicap when a tournament visits a course for the first time. No way DeChambeau wins again but ride him for a Top 10. Ditto Johnson. The winner is Tony Finau at +2000. He has finished Top 5 in both playoff events thus far.
