2024 Tour Championship: PGA Tour Golf Betting Odds
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is favoured on the golf odds.
The Top 30 in FedExCup points advanced through last week’s BMW Championship in Colorado, won by Keegan Bradley as he jumped from 50th in points (the last man in the BMW field) to fourth. Bradley became the first Ryder Cup captain — he was appointed for Team USA in 2025 about six weeks ago — to win a PGA Tour event in nine years. He is also an assistant captain for the Presidents Cup next month in Montreal.
Three other players moved from outside the Top 30 to inside at the BMW Championship: Adam Scott from No. 41 to 14, Tommy Fleetwood from 31 to 22, and Chris Kirk from 32 to 26. Which of course means four guys fell out: Brian Harman (29 to 31), Jason Day (25 to 33), Davis Thompson (26 to 34) and Denny McCarthy (30 to 35). Missing out from Canada were Corey Conners (went from 33 to 39 after the BMW) and Adam Hadwin (42 to 47).
East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta hosts again but will now play to par 71 at approximately 7,490 yards. It had been a par 70 at 7,345 yards but was renovated after the 2023 tournament.
You will hear mixed opinions from players on the format of the Tour Championship. Scheffler as the points leader begins the tournament at 10 under par. The next four start at 8 under through 5 under, respectively, and then it drops by one stroke per five players to where those in spots 26-30 start at even par. No cut.
Norway’s Viktor Hovland is the defending champion. He was the No. 2 seed going into the 2023 event, meaning he started at 8-under par. Hovland shot a 19-under 261 to technically finish at 27-under. The 19 under tied for the best score in the field with Xander Schauffele, who started the tournament at 3-under par and thus finished five shots back in second.
The 63 by Hovland was the lowest final-round score for a Tour Championship winner. No player has ever repeated in this tournament. Note that we picked a European winner last year in this space at -125, writing that we got Hovland as one of the options as a reason.
Scheffler has called the format silly even though he stands to benefit this most as he chases a first-ever Tour Championship title and FedExCup playoff prize. Last year, Scheffler started at 10 under and went just 1 under over 72 holes on his own.
“You can’t call it a season-long race and have it come down to one tournament,” he said. “Hypothetically, we get to East Lake and my neck flares up and it doesn’t heal the way it did at the Players. I finish 30th in the FedEx Cup because I had to withdraw from the last tournament? Is that really the season-long race? No, it is what it is.”
But then someone like Rory McIlroy, who has won the FedExCup a record three times (last in 2022), is a fan of the setup for a fairly obvious reason: “If it wasn’t this format, then none of us would have a chance against Scottie because he’s so far ahead. So I really like this format.”
The Tour’s Fall Series begins Sept. 12 with the Procure Championship in California wine country and we’ll see you then.
Tour Championship Golf Odds
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the +115 favourite – we normally would never see a price that low but, remember, he starts at 10 under and with a two-shot lead. Scheffler comes off a season-worst T33 at the BMW Championship, but he also didn’t have to play aggressively to win in order to keep the top seed entering this tournament. Scheffler’s best Tour Championship result was a runner-up in 2022 to Rory McIlroy.
Xander Schauffele (+225) starts at 8 under. He has had a four straight Top 10 finishes on Tour after a T5 at the BMW Championship but had to win to get the top seed for the Tour Championship. As noted above, Schauffele tied for the lowest gross score last year in Atlanta but finished runner-up. He also finished second in 2020 and ’19 and won the tournament in 2017 when it was a normal format.
Hideki Matsuyama (+1000), Ludvig Aberg (+1800) and McIlroy (+1800) round out the favourites. Matsuyama won this year’s first playoff event but then withdrew from the BMW Championship and starts at 7 under chasing his first Tour Championship title. Aberg starts at 6 under and makes his tournament debut. McIlroy has won this event a record-tying three times and was 11th in 2023 – which was the same finish he had Sunday at the BMW Championship.
The lone Canadian winner of the Tour Championship was Mike Weir in 2001. Nick Taylor finished 25th last year and Corey Conners 26th. That was the first time in the playoff era that two Canadian players reached East Lake. The only one in this year is Taylor Pendrith at 25th in points. He will start the tournament at 1 under and is +35000.
