2023 Wells Fargo Championship: PGA Tour Betting Odds

Many top players will use this tournament as their warmup for the second major of the year. Rory McIlroy is favoured on the golf odds.

The Wells Fargo was upgraded to a designated event by the Tour this year, which means top players almost have to play it or face penalties, and the purse was raised to $20 million (US). Quail Hollow is a very popular stop on the Tour and has hosted this event every year but two since its inception in 2003.

Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C., hosted in 2017 as Quail Hollow was preparing for the PGA Championship, while TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Maryland hosted last year because Quail Hollow was preparing to host the Presidents Cup. Team USA won that in a rout over the International squad.

Quail Hollow is a par 71 at approximately 7,540 yards with the tournament-record score 21-under 267 by Rory McIlroy in 2015 when he won by a whopping seven shots. The defending champion is American Max Homa, who finished at 8-under 272 (remember, a different course) and two up on Keegan Bradley, Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young. Homa began the final round two behind Bradley but took control with a four-shot swing on the first four holes. Weather was a major factor last year.

Homa also won in 2019 at Quail Hollow, shooting 15-under 269 to prevail by three shots. Homa and McIlroy (three times) are the only players to win the tournament multiple times. There hasn’t been a playoff in the tournament since James Hahn beat Roberto Castro in 2016.

Rory McIlroy is +750 to win this for a record fourth time. No. 3 came in 2021 at Quail Hollow when he shot 10-under 274. We last saw McIlroy miss the cut at the Masters. He has finished outside the Top 10 of this event just twice in 11 starts, including a fifth-place result last season.

Patrick Cantlay is +1200 with Tony Finau +1400, Xander Schauffele +1600, defending champion Max Homa +2000 and Collin Morikawa +2000.

Cantlay missed the cut here last year. He comes off back-to-back Top 5 finishes on the PGA Tour this year (one in team event). Finau won the Mexico Open on Sunday for his fifth career PGA Tour win, edging out world No. 1 Jon Rahm, who isn’t playing this week. Finau has a best result of 16th in this tournament. Schauffele was 14th last year. Homa looks to become the first repeat winner of the tournament but has missed the cut in back-to-back events this year. It’s the event debut for Morikawa.

No Canadian has won this event. Last year, Mackenzie Hughes was the top finisher at T9 thanks to a final-round 67. Nick Taylor was T15, Corey Conners T21 and Michael Gligic T37. Drew Nesbitt, Adam Svensson and Roger Sloan missed the cut. Conners is +5500 this week with Adam Hadwin +9000, Svensson +17500, Taylor Pendrith +20000 and Mackenzie Hughes +20000.

Wells Fargo Championship Golf Predictions

Take Rory McIlroy for another Top 10, but the value winner is Keith Mitchell at +6600. He has a stroke average of 69.75 in his past 12 rounds at Quail Hollow, second-best of anyone. That any American wins is -200.
