2023 Sanderson Farms Championship: PGA Tour Golf Betting Odds

Ludvig Aberg is favoured on the golf odds.

Even though this is the lone professional event annually in the state, it’s arguably the weakest field of the year on the Tour because it’s the week after the Ryder Cup and part of the Fall Series, which is essentially only for the lower-tier guys.

The Sanderson Farms Championship dates to 1968 but to 2013 in its current form. The Country Club of Jackson is the host track, a par 72 at approximately 7,460 yards. It’s setup as a ball-striker’s course. Only three players have won here twice: Dwight Nevil (1973-74), Brian Henninger (1994, ’99) and Fred Funk (1998, 2004).

Canadians have had a lot of success in the event. Dan Halldorson won in 1986, Richard Zokol in 1992, Nick Taylor in 2014 and Mackenzie Hughes last year in a playoff over Sepp Straka. Hughes, who was priced +10000 entering to win, had to made difficult par saves on the 18th hole twice: In regulation from 100 feet behind the green for a 3-under 69 to force a playoff and from a tough spot in a bunker to keep going in the playoff.

Hughes then made birdie on his third time playing the 18th while Straka missed his attempt from 18 feet. It was Hughes’ second PGA Tour victory, and he hasn’t won since. Mark Hubbard entered the final with a one-shot lead but shot 74 and tied for fifth.

Ludvig Aberg, a 23-year-old Tour rookie from Sweden, was a big part of Europe’s Ryder Cup win in Rome as he went undefeated alongside Viktor Hovland in two foursomes matches, including a record-setting, 9-and-7 victory over Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler. Aberg finished 2-2 overall.

After a spectacular amateur career at Texas Tech, Aberg became the first player to earn full PGA Tour status via the PGA Tour University initiative. He has played nine PGA Tour events this year with one Top 10 but has a win in Europe and is the +1200 favourite this week. It’s Aberg’s first time playing here.

Eric Cole and Stephan Jaeger are each +2000 with Emiliano Grillo at +2200 and Beau Hossler +2800. Grillo was fifth here last year and has a scoring average of 69.63 in 16 rounds at the Country Club of Jackson. Cole is likely the leader for PGA Tour Rookie of the Year with four Top 10s, including a few weeks ago at the Fall Series-opening Fortinet Championship. Hossler was Top 10 here in 2017 and is having his best season overall.

We mentioned the Canadian success at this event above with defending champion Mackenzie Hughes at +6600 to repeat. He hadn’t contended here previously. Adam Svensson is +4000 and the -135 favourite as top Canadian. Michael Gligic is +50000 to win.

Six of the last nine winners at the Sanderson Farms Championship have been first-time PGA Tour winners.

Sanderson Farms Championship Golf Predictions

We like American Nick Hardy at +5500 for his first individual Tour win. He did get a “team” win with partner Davis Riley earlier this year in New Orleans and was T5 at this event last year.
