2023 PGA Championship: Picks, Predictions, Groups, Tee Times

Jon Rahm looks to Thursday morning’s tee-off at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York leading the way as a +800 favourite to claim a third career major tourney title after taking home the green jacket at last month’s Masters Tournament. However, golf betting fans can find plenty of value among the hundreds of props and head-to-head bets available on the second major tournament of the season.

Here’s a look at some of the best bets to consider this weekend at the 2023 PGA Championship

Veterans Look to Build on Past Success at Oak Hill

This year marks return of the PGA Championship to Oak Hill for the first time since 2013. Jason Dufner earned the victory at this tourney 10 years ago, but this year’s edition features several players who turned in impressive performance the last time this tourney was held in Rochester.

Adam Scott competed in each of the past two editions of the PGA Championship held at Oak Hill. The 42-year-old Australian claimed a share of 23rd place back in 2003, and also shared the first-round lead before settling for fifth place in 2013. While he stumbled to a 39th-place finish last month at Augusta, Scott has since turned his season around with top-ten finishes at both the Wells Fargo Championship and last week’s Byron Nelson, and offers considerable value as a +605 bet to crack the top ten once again this weekend.

Scott also stands out as a high-value +451 bet to be the top Australian this weekend. However, he could face a stiff challenge from a fellow countryman who also performed well here in 2013, and who is coming off his first victory in five years.

  • Adam Scott +7500

Day on the Comeback Trail

After struggling with vertigo in recent weeks, Jason Day flashed vintage form while claiming the top of the leaderboard at last weekend’s Byron Nelson. The 35-year-old finished eighth at Oak Hill in 2013, and has recorded six top ten finishes at the PGA Championship including his lone career major win in 2015.

Day’s resurgence has made him not only a +199 favourite to be this weekend’s top Australian and +548 chalk to be the top Rest of the World player. However, durability remains a concern. Day has kept a heavy schedule that has featured tournament appearances in each of the past two weeks. And while he has enjoyed steady success, he has managed to finish better than 35th just once while playing a third tournament in as many weeks over the past three season.

Accordingly, the likeable Australian remains a solid +3600 bet to seize the first-round lead, but better betting options may emerge as the weekend progresses.

Top Australian
  • Jason Day +197
  • Cameron Smith +232
  • Adam Scott +438
  • Min Woo Lee +900
  • Cameron Davis +900
  • Lucas Herbert +1000
  • David Micheluzzi +1800

Can Phil Build on Masters Magic?

Phil Mickelson claimed an ounce of redemption in his return to the Masters last month. The 52-year-old legend rode a late-tournament resurgence to a second-place finish at Augusta. That performance has heightened interest in his return to the PGA Championship for the first time since he raised the Wanamaker Trophy two years ago.

That may encourage Lefty’s loyal betting fans to back him again this weekend. However, it is tough to overlook Mickelson’s uneven performances on the LIV Golf tour this season, where he has yet to crack the top ten in six appearances this season, capped by a dismal 45th-place finish last weekend in Tulsa.

To Make The Cut - Phil Mickelson
  • No -122
  • Yes -114

While his fans can be forgiven for backing him with as a +1200 bet to crack the top ten for the 10th time in his illustrious career, it is likely that the greater value can be found in the short -122 odds of Lefty missing the cut amid the unusually brisk conditions expected this weekend at Oak Hill.

Picks: Adam Scott top ten finish (+605); Jason Day first round leader (+3600): Phil Mickelson miss the cut (-122)
