2023 PGA Championship: PGA Tour Betting Odds
Held at one of the top courses in the United States, Oak Hill in New York, this year’s Championship sees Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler favoured on the golf odds.
Tiger Woods will not be playing this week or probably the rest of this year. He withdrew from the Masters before completing his third round due to ankle issues and then had an additional surgery on that ankle. It would be an upset if he plays again in 2023 – maybe his silly season event in December. Tiger’s four PGA Championship wins, last in 2007, are second-most in history behind the five by Jack Nicklaus.
Jordan Spieth tries again to complete the career grand slam. Well, he’ll try to play after withdrawing ahead of last week’s AT&T Byron Nelson with a wrist injury. For Spieth to not play an event in his native Texas means it’s a pretty serious injury.
A field of 155 is set to tee it up with 18 from LIV Golf. It includes 99 of the top 100 players on the official World Ranking. The only one missing is Will Zalatoris, who has been sidelined by back surgery.
Oak Hill Country Club’s East Course, a par 70 at about 7,400 yards, in Pittsford, N.Y., hosts for the fourth time. It last did in 2013 when American Jason Dufner prevailed at 10-under 270 by two over Jim Furyk. The first time Oak Hill hosted was in 1980 when Nicklaus won his final PGA Championship. The course underwent a complete renovation in 2020 and will about 250 yards longer than in 2013 and there are three holes that are new from a decade ago.
The defending champion is American Justin Thomas. He trailed by seven entering the final round but tied for the best Sunday round with a 3-under 67 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., to finish 72 holes tied at 5-under 275 with Zalatoris. Thomas played the three-hole aggregate playoff in 1-under, edging Zalatoris by a stroke. It was Thomas’ second PGA Championship victory, also prevailing in 2017 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. Brooks Koepka (now with LIV) in 2019 was the last repeat winner.
The 54-hole leader last year was Mito Pereira, but he made double bogey on the 72nd hole to shoot 75 and finish one stroke shy of the playoff.
PGA Championship Golf Odds
World No. 1 Jon Rahm and No. 2 Scottie Scheffler are both +800 to win the Wanamaker Trophy. Rahm already has four wins on the season, including the Masters, and last played at the Mexico Open and finished runner-up. His best PGA Championship finish is fourth. Scheffler has two wins this season and come off a Top 5 on Sunday at the Byron Nelson in Texas. Scheffler’s worst finish in 2023 is T12. His best PGA Championship result is fourth.
Rory McIlroy is +1300 with Brooks Koepka +1800, Xander Schauffele +1900, Patrick Cantlay +2000, Justin Thomas +2300 and Dustin Johnson +2300. McIlroy, a member at Oak Hill, has won the tournament twice, last in 2014 in Louisville.
Koepka won in 2018 in the St. Louis area and in 2019 also in New York state at Bethpage Black. He was a co-runner-up in 2021 to Phil Mickelson. Cantlay and Schauffele are looking for their first major. As noted above, Thomas is the defending champion and has won the event twice overall. Johnson won the LIV Golf event Sunday in Oklahoma and is a two-time PGA Championship runner-up.
Jason Day, who won Sunday at the Byron Nelson, is +2600. The Aussie won the 2015 PGA Championship in Wisconsin. Jordan Spieth is +3500 to complete the career grand slam.
No Canadian has won this tournament. Adam Hadwin was the top finisher last year at T71, while Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes missed the cut. Conners is +8000 this week with Hadwin +20800, Adam Svensson +27500, Hughes +29400, Nick Taylor +30900 and Taylor Pendrith +41700.
PGA Championship Golf Predictions
We like Patrick Cantlay at +2000 to win his first major. Since a missed cut on Super Bowl Weekend, Cantlay hasn’t been worse than T21 in eight events with five Top 10s.
