2023 Charles Schwab Challenge: PGA Tour Betting Odds

Scottie Scheffler is favoured on the golf odds at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Because this comes the week after a major championship and isn’t an elevated event, the field is lacking big names. It’s also officially an invitational so a field limited to around 120. There are a lot of professionals from Texas so most of them are playing, and Colonial Country Club is an historic track.

It was built in 1936, hosted the 1941 U.S. Open and has held an annual PGA Tour event since 1946. Colonial is a par 70 at 7,210 yards and holes 3-5 are considered the toughest stretch on the course, nicknamed the “Horrible Horseshoe.” It hosts for the 78th time, making this the longest-running non-major on Tour to be contested on the same course.

In addition to a check, FedExCup points and the like earned by a winner, he also gets a Scottish Royal Tartan Plaid jacket and this year a fully restored and modernized 1973 Schwab Bronco. Last year it was a 1979 Schwab Firebird for the winner.

The defending champion is Sam Burns. He and fellow American Scottie Scheffler finished 72 holes at 8-under 271, and Burns beat Scheffler on the first playoff hole (No. 18). Burns started the final round in a tie for 17th place and was seven shots behind Scheffler when he hit his first shot. It was very windy on Sunday so few golfers had strong final rounds, but Burns posted one of 12 scores in the 60s.

Burns is +2200 to repeat this week. Only one golfer in tournament history has defended his title: Ben Hogan (twice). Club pro Michael Block, who made a name for himself at the PGA Championship over the weekend with a hole-an-one and a Top 15 finish, got a sponsor exemption into this field and is +32200.

Scottie Scheffler (+484) moved back to No. 1 in the world on Monday after finishing co-runner-up at the PGA Championship; Scheffler had the 36-hole lead but finished two behind LIV Tour member Brooks Koepka. Scheffler had that runner-up here last year.

Dallas-area native Jordan Spieth and Tony Finau are +1200. Spieth was unable to play the other tournament in the area, the Byron Nelson ahead of the PGA Championship, due to injury. Spieth then finished T29 at the PGA. He won here in 2016 and has been a runner-up three times, last in 2021. Finau was a runner-up in 2019 and T4 last year.

Viktor Hovland (+1600), Sungjae Im (+1600), Collin Morikawa (+1800) and Max Homa (+1800) round out the favourites. Hovland was co-second at the PGA Championship on Sunday. Im has a best finish of T10 in the tournament. Morikawa was a runner-up in 2020. Homa hasn’t contended here.

No Canadian player has won this tournament. George Knudson was second to Bruce Crampton in 1965. Adam Svensson was the top finisher last year at T40, with Nick Taylor T48. Svensson has withdrawn this week. Taylor is +9100.

Charles Schwab Challenge Golf Predictions

Lean Brendon Todd at +7100 as he has been third and eighth the past two years at the tournament and also will play American winning for the fifth straight year at -286 as winning nationality.
