The two big storylines at the U.S. Open, the third major championship of the season, are that Tiger Woods isn’t in the tournament but that Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and a handful of others who took the big money and quit the PGA Tour for the new Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series are playing. Apparently, those guys will only be able to play the major championships now. The U.S. Open is the lone thing missing from Mickelson’s Hall of Fame resume. He has finished runner-up an amazing six times in this tournament, usually the most challenging setup on Tour. Johnson, a former world No. 1, won the 2016 U.S. Open. He’s +3300 with Lefty at +15000.

Tiger withdrew after a third-round 79 at the PGA Championship as he appeared to be favouring that injured leg. Again, the U.S. Open is a very tough setup and probably the hardest to walk so Tiger is skipping to get healthy for next month’s British Open. Woods reportedly was offered nearly $1 billion (US) to join the LIV Golf Series but passed. He is a three-time U.S. Open champion, last that epic 19-hole Monday playoff win over Rocco Mediate in 2008. The playoff format was changed a few years ago to two-hole aggregate.

The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., is the host this year. It hosted the 2013 U.S. Amateur won by England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, the memorable 1999 Ryder Cup won by the USA over Europe and last the U.S. Open in 1988 when Curtis Strange beat Nick Faldo in a playoff.

Three-time PGA Tour winner Jonas Blixt led three qualifiers from Rattlesnake Point Golf Club in Canada last week to get into the U.S. Open. The other qualifiers from there were Callum Tarren of England and Satoshi Kodaira of Japan.

U.S. Open Golf Odds

Fresh off a win at the Canadian Open on Sunday, McIlroy is the +1000 favourite. He wasn’t favoured before that win. It has been eight years since McIlroy won a major championship. He has been Top 10 in the past three U.S. Opens and won it in 2011 outside Washington, D.C.

Justin Thomas is +1200 with Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler both +1400. Thomas won this year’s PGA Championship and Scheffler the Masters. Neither has won this tournament. Rahm is the defending champion. He shot a final-round 67 at Torrey Pines in San Diego last year to finish at 6-under 278 and a shot up on Louis Oosthuizen. It was Rahm’s first major title and still his only one – but almost surely not his last. Oosthuizen needed an eagle on 18 to force a playoff, and he did eagle it on Saturday, but could only manage birdie.

Players from 11 different countries have won the U.S. Open but not from Canada. Last year, Mackenzie Hughes was the top Canadian at T15 with Adam Hadwin T40. Taylor Pendrith and Corey Conners missed the cut. Conners is +5000 this week with Hughes +15000, Nick Taylor +30000, Roger Sloan +50000 and Ben Silverman each +50000.

U.S. Open Golf Predictions

Like McIlroy and Rahm for Top 10s but the winner is Harris English at +15000. Seems to thrive at these tough courses with a third and fourth in his past two U.S. Opens.
