A Canadian won on the PGA Tour last week. Could it happen this week at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas? Patrick Cantlay is favoured on the golf odds.

It’s a bit of a better field this week than the past few because guys want to play in Vegas and a handful of PGA Tour pros live there. A handful of Presidents Cup players from Team USA and the international squad are teeing it up.

TPC Summerlin, which is at about 2,700 feet above sea level, is an easy par 71 at 7,255 yards. It’s almost surely going to take at least 20 under par to win. The 72-hole record is a 260, and the TPC Summerlin 18-hole record a 60 by a few players. This event has been around since 1983 and was a five-round tournament for many years.

The defending champion is South Korea’s Sungjae Im, who shot 24-under 260 last year to beat out Matthew Wolff by four. Im co-led with Chad Ramey through the first two rounds by shooting of 63 and 65 (the first time in his career he started with two bogey-free rounds). A third-round 70 left Im at 15-under, three shots back of Saturday night leader Adam Schenk, but Im shot a 62 on Sunday. It was his second Tour win following the 2020 Honda Classic in Florida. Im hasn’t won since.

Former FedExCup champion and PGA Tour Player of the Year Patrick Cantlay is the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 4 and is the +615 favourite. He won here in 2017 in a playoff and was a runner-up the next two years. His overall scoring average in 16 rounds at the course is a stellar 66.63. Cantlay didn’t play it last year.

Sungjae Im is +1000 to repeat, which only Jim Furyk has done in the tournament. Im was Top 15 in his previous two trips to Vegas. It’s his first event of the new season but he did play pretty well at the Presidents Cup. Max Homa is +1400 with Aaron Wise +1200 and Tom Kim +2300. Homa has yet to contender here but was 4-0-0 at the Presidents Cup and won the Fortinet Championship to kick off the new season. Wise was T8 here last year. Kim plays here for the first time but won the Wyndham Championship back in August.

Canadian Mackenzie Hughes won the Sanderson Farms Championship in a playoff over Sepp Straka on Sunday in Mississippi but is taking the week off. Adam Hadwin was the top Canadian last year at T6 in this event and is +4000. Taylor Pendrith is +3800 and was T47 in 2021. Nick Taylor is +7900 as is Adam Svensson. Michael Gligic is +12000. No Canadian has won this tournament.

Shriners Children’s Open Golf Predictions

Take Cantlay for a Top 10 but the winner is Belgian Thomas Detry at +5100. He enters with three straight Top 10 finishes (one in Europe) and debuts here.
