2022 John Deere Classic: PGA Tour Odds and Betting

The John Deere Classic will feel the pain of the new LIV Golf Series this week as it’s perhaps the worst field on the PGA Tour so far this season. Webb Simpson is favoured to win on the PGA Tour golf odds.

This tournament used to be held the week before the British Open, offering up a final spot in the major, with organizers chartering a private plane to fly players overseas after the final round in an effort to boost the field. Unfortunately for the John Deere Classic, it’s now two weeks ahead of the British Open and there’s a new PGA Tour-sanctioned event next week in Scotland, so many players already are in the United Kingdom.

This also will be the first week the LIV Golf Series really hits the PGA Tour hard with the additions of big names like Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau (he won here in 2017), Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed and Phil Mickelson all playing in that tour’s event this weekend – although likely none of them would have played the John Deere regardless. A handful of others on the LIV Series would have. Thus, the John Deere field is full of players ranked between No. 75 and 150 on the FedEx Cup list

TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., is the host course, a par 71 at around 7,290 yards. The signature hole is the gorgeous par-3 16th called “Mother Earth.” It’s an easy track that likely will take 20-under par or perhaps better to win. The tournament record score was 27-under 257 by Michael Kim in 2018.

The defending champion is Lucas Glover (+4600 to repeat), who finished at 19-under 265. He ended a 10-year victory drought when he birdied five of his last seven holes for a 7-under 64 on Sunday to win by two over Ryan Moore and Kevin Na. Glover, a former U.S. Open champion, hasn’t won since and is having a rough season. Sebastian Munoz of Colombia, who started the 2021 final round with a one-shot lead, shot a final-round 71 and finished fourth, three shots back.

The 2020 tournament was cancelled due to the pandemic. Three spots in the British Open are up for grabs for those who have not already earned a spot at St. Andrews.

John Deere Classic Golf Odds

The original betting favourite at +1100 was Daniel Berger, but he withdrew on Monday due to injury. Berger was the only player in the world’s Top 50 registered for the event.

Simpson is now the +1500 favourite. He hasn’t played here in several years and comes off a T26 over the weekend at the Travelers Championship. Canadian Adam Hadwin is +1900 with Maverick McNealy and Denny McCarthy both +2000. Hadwin’s best result at the tournament is T8 in 2016, his last visit here. McNealy was T18 last year. McCarthy has missed the cut in the event in back-to-back years. Sahith Theegala, who was co-runner-up Sunday at the Travelers, is +2200. He was in position to win but double-bogeyed his 72nd hole and Xander Schauffele (not playing this week) won.

Canada’s Dave Barr won this event in 1981 in a playoff over fellow Canadian Dan Halldorson as well as Woody Blackburn, Frank Conner and Victor Regalado. David Hearn (and Zach Johnson) lost in a 2013 playoff against Jordan Spieth. Nick Taylor was the top Canadian finisher last year at T28 with Hearn T50 and Roger Sloan 71st. Michael Gligic missed the cut. Taylor Pendrith is +3600 this week with Adam Svensson +5100, Taylor +8100, Sloan +12700, Gligic +30900 and Hearn +52600.
