2020 The Northern Trust: PGA Tour Golf Betting Odds
The Top 125 in points qualified for the playoffs, with the Top 70 moving on to next week’s BMW Championship outside Chicago and then the Top 30 to the following week’s Tour Championship.
World No. 1 Justin Thomas didn’t even play last week at the Wyndham Championship but ended up clinching the No. 1 seed in the FedExCup playoffs, which earned him a $2 million (US) bonus. Other players who finished in the Top 10 also got bonuses.
The Northern Trust has been around in some form since 1967 and has had numerous titles. It was known as The Barclays when the FedExCup playoffs debuted in 2007. Last year it was held at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey, and Patrick Reed won the tournament for a second time, finishing at 16-under 268 to edge Abraham Ancer by a shot. Reed didn’t have a single three-putt all week. He’s +2600 this week.
While TPC Boston hasn’t hosted this tournament, it was the site of the Deutsche Bank Championship/Dell Technologies Championship when it was also part of the playoff until the PGA Tour shortened it to three events last year. DeChambeau won the 2018 Dell Technologies Championship at 16-under 268, two up on Justin Rose.
TPC Boston is a par 72 at approximately 7,340 yards. The par 5 18th is very reachable in two at 530 yards, but bunkers and wetlands protect the green.
The Northern Trust Betting Odds
DeChambeau is the +1100 favourite. He took last week off after finishing T4 at the PGA Championship. World No. 1 Thomas is +1200 along with Rory McIlroy. Thomas won the 2017 Dell Technologies Championship at this course, finishing at 17-under 267. McIlroy won it twice when it was the Deutsche Bank.
Jon Rahm is +1400 with Dustin Johnson +1600, Xander Schauffele +1700 and PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa +1900. Tiger Woods is +3600. This is a rare event he hasn’t won, but he did take the 2004 Dell Technologies. Jim Herman is a +25600 long shot despite winning the Wyndham Championship on Sunday. He nearly missed the cut but went nuts on the weekend by shooting 61-63.
No Canadian has won The Northern Trust, although Graham DeLaet was one of four runners-up to Adam Scott in 2013 when it was held at Liberty National. No player from Canada won the Deutsche Bank/Dell at TPC Boston, either, with Mike Weir a distant runner-up in 2008 to Vijay Singh.
Last year at The Northern Trust, Corey Conners was the top Canadian at T21 by shooting 8 under. Adam Hadwin was T43 at 4 under, Roger Sloan T64 at 1 under and Mackenzie Hughes T67 at even par. Nick Taylor missed the cut. Hadwin is +14800 this week with Conners +15200, Hughes +19600 and Taylor +29100. All four are comfortably in the Top 70 so should advance regardless.
The Northern Trust Predictions
Take Thomas and McIlroy for Top 10s, but the winner at +5100 is Rose. As noted, he was the runner-up to DeChambeau in the 2018 Dell Technologies and needs a good finish this week to get into the Top 70 – Rose is 109th in points.
