2019 Wyndham Championship: PGA Tour Odds & Prediction
Most times, we focus these PGA Tour previews on the stars in a given tournament field. That’s not really going to be the case this week with the Wyndham Championship from Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Wyndham Championship History, Location and Dates
There really aren’t any big names in the field following back-to-back weeks of the British Open and WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational where everyone who is everyone played both (other than Tiger Woods at the St. Jude).
Most guys are resting up for the start of the FedExCup playoffs, which begin next week at the Northern Trust. The playoffs have been shortened from four tournaments to three this season. The focus this week, then, is the guys down around No. 125 in the FedExCup points because only the Top 125 make the playoffs. Alex Noren is currently 125th with Austin Cook at 126. A few other notable golfers who would miss out on the playoffs without a strong week are Jason Dufner (136), Bill Haas (140), Martin Kaymer (146), Zach Johnson (152), Jimmy Walker (155) and Ernie Els (182).
Sedgefield’s Ross Course is a par 70 that will play around 7,125 yards. It has hosted this event every year since 2008 (and also did in some previous years). One of the 59s on the PGA Tour was shot here by Brandt Snedeker in the first round a year ago.
Wyndham Championship Betting Favourites
Webb Simpson, a North Carolina native, will be the crowd favourite this week and is also the Sports Interaction betting favourite at +1100. Since 2010, he has six Top-10 finishes here. Simpson won in 2011 and was a runner-up last year. He also comes off a second-place finish last week.
Hideki Matsuyama is +1400 with rookie Collin Morikawa the same price. Matsuyama has a best result of third here in 2016 and was 11th last year. It’s Morikawa’s tournament debut. He won the opposite-field PGA Tour event last week in Nevada.
Jordan Spieth is +1600 with Paul Casey at +2000. Spieth hasn’t played here since 2012 when he was second. Casey was third in 2015. Snedeker is the defending champion and +2200. He finished at 21-under, three ahead of Simpson and Cheng Tsung Pan. No player has repeated here since Sam Snead in the 1950s (Snead won this event a record eight times). Snedeker also won this tournament in 2007 at a different course.
Canadian Golfer Odds
One Canadian has won this tournament: Stan Leonard shot 4-under 276 to prevail by three at Sedgefield in 1957.
Adam Hadwin is +5000 this week. He’s 41st in points so will make the playoffs regardless. Corey Conners is +10000 and sits 31st in points so he’s also good. Roger Sloan (91st) is +10000, Mackenzie Hughes +12500, Nick Taylor (114th) +15000, Adam Svensson (171) +15000 and Ben Silverman (181) +20000. Taylor was T8 here last year.
Wyndham Championship Predictions
Take Snedeker and Simpson for Top 10s, but we’re going with longer-shot Ryan Armour at +10000 to win. He was eighth here last year and fourth in 2017.
