Tiger-Cats vs. Elks Prediction: CFL Week 6 Point Spread, Odds

The visiting Tiger-Cats restored some honour in Week 5 by defeating the Ottawa Redblacks 21-13. Edmonton was away to Saskatchewan and, for reasons we’ll get into, blew a glorious chance to win the game.

At the moment the CFL odds have Orlondo Steinauer’s Ticats as -2.5 favourites, with the total set at 42.5.

CFL Odds and Betting

Week 6 is the first time the squads cross paths in 2023. A second will come in August. There was only one such occasion last season. It was on Canada and ended up being a rare bright spot on Edmonton’s calendar as they went into Hamilton and won 29-25. There was also only a single meeting in 2021, a game claimed by the Tiger-Cats 39-23.

Right now and for the most part in the CFL, outright wins and losses are reflected in whether teams cover the spread or not. As such, Hamilton is 1-3 ATS just as they are in the East Division standings. One of two exceptions heading into Week 6 are in fact the Elks, who covered at least once. Incidentally last week in a 12-11 defeat to the Roughriders, the other exception around the league.

The Over is 1-4 in Elks games. The Over is 2-2 in Ticats games, although their lone win was not one of those occasions.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Winning feels good. Furthermore, it’s not as if Hamilton isn’t wrestling with its own issues under centre this season either. All that said, one can argue they defeated what must have been a slightly deflated Redblacks squad at home 21-13 in Week 5.

With Jeremiah Masoli out for Ottawa due to an injury suffered in the second quarter, Hamilton only had to limit their own errors and hold the fort. The Tiger-Cats outgained the Redblacks 323 to 276, and while that looks close, it had a lot to do with Ottawa’s quarterback play getting sabotaged again (Hamilton led through the air 219 to 140). Matthew Schiltz had an all around good game, going 19-for-26 and 233 yards, a TD and one INT. Duke Williams was a little quiet, catching only three passes, but he averaged 14.3 yards, so every ball was critical. LB Jameer Thurman had a good day at the office, tallying nine tackles.

It was a bit of a slugfest, but when coveting that precious first win of a new season, teams will take it anyway they can.

Edmonton Elks

Week 5 typified what the Edmonton Elks are. They can make some plays. They have guys on the roster who can have decent outings. The problem is they commit careless mistakes and their collective efforts usually unravel one way or another.

Consider that in the 12-11 defeat to the Roughriders, Edmonton scored first three times. How? With three singles – or “rouge” – off a missed field goal the Riders didn’t take out of the end zone and then the same result on two punts. What’s more, the Elks led 11-3 late in the fourth quarter until the hosts tied it with less than two minutes to go when Trevor Harris found Mitchell Picton in the end zone from four yards out, followed by a two points conversion. Then came the play that got everybody talking when Elks WR CJ Sims allowed the kick off return to bounce into the end zone without taking it out…another rouge but this one for the Riders, hence the 12-11 defeat. It’s like Edmonton can’t help itself.

Collectively the running game was good, amassing over 100 yards through Kevin Brown and QB Taylor Cornelius scamping. The defence also limited Saskatchewan to 78 rushing yards. Good but not good enough.
