Stampeders vs. Elks Prediction: CFL Week 5 Point Spread, Odds

The Edmonton Elks will look to get some revenge on the Stampeders when they host Calgary on Thursday.  Edmonton picked up their first win of the season last week, downing the Tiger-Cats 29-25 in Hamilton on Canada Day, but the Elks still sit last in the West Division with a 1-4 record.  Calgary, coming off a bye week, sits in a three-way tie for first in the West with a 3-0 record, including a 30-23 victory over Edmonton on June 25.

The Stampeders are favoured to win on the CFL odds.

CFL Odds and Betting

This will be the second of four Battle of Alberta’s in the CFL this season. It’s the first time the Stampeders and Elks will meet four times in a single regular season since 2012.  The teams met just twice in last year’s abbreviated schedule, with the road team taking both games.  Over the last couple of seasons, Calgary has won five of the last six games.  The total has gone Over in four of the last five head-to-heads.

Dating back to last season, the Stamps are 5-1 both straight up and against the spread in their last six road dates.  They’re 1-2 ATS overall this year, with the lone cover coming in their only road game, and they’re 4-2 ATS in their last six against Edmonton.  The total has gone Over in all three of Calgary’s games this season.

The Elks finally picked up their first win of the year last week in Hamilton, but it’s worth noting that dating back to last season, they’re just 2-12 in their last 14 games overall and 0-5 in their last five at home.  They’re 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games, although they’ve managed to go 2-1 ATS this season.  The total went Under in Edmonton’s only home game this season, while they hit the Over in all three of their road games.

Calgary Stampeders

Stamps quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was a late-decision to play in Week 3 against the Elks, but it proved to be the right move as he completed 21 of 28 passes for 321 yards and one touchdown.  Mitchell has been dealing with a sore foot, but he was a full participant at practice this week and is expected to play on Thursday coming out of the bye week.  Ka’Deem Carey picked up 91 rushing yards and a touchdown against Edmonton, while Tommy Stevens also added a running score.  Malik Henry recorded 173 receiving yards and a touchdown on six catches.

Defensively against the Elks, linebacker Cameron Judge picked off Edmonton quarterback Nick Arbuckle for a crucial interception late in the third quarter.  The play set up Mitchell’s touchdown pass to Henry, giving Calgary their first lead of the game.  Defensive end Shawn Lemon added a pair of sacks and a pass knockdown in the third to give the Stampeders a three-point lead at the end of the quarter.  After being shutout in the first quarter, Calgary outscored the Elks in the second, third and fourth.

Edmonton Elks

The Edmonton Elks have plenty to build off following their first win of the season last week in Hamilton.  Canadian quarterback Tre Ford picked up the win in his first career CFL start, roughly 30 minutes away from his hometown of Niagara Falls, Ontario.  Ford completed 15 of 26 pass attempts for 159 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also adding a game-high 61 yards on the ground.  The rookie quarterback did, however, look shaky at times as the Elks trailed by 13 points early in the third quarter.  It’s unclear if Ford will get the start again in a tough matchup against Calgary, or if the struggling Arbuckle, who started all three of Edmonton’s losses this season, will get another shot.

Kai Locksley picked up just six rushing yards on five runs against the Ti-Cats, although he did punch in a one-yard touchdown.  Kenny Lawler led the receivers with 43 yards and a touchdown on four catches.  The game’s winning play came with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when defensive back Scott Hutter tackled Hamilton quarterback Dane Evans and knocked the ball loose.  Jalen Collins recovered the ball for a 14-yard touchdown to complete the comeback.
