A pair of eliminated clubs close out their campaigns on the West coast Friday night in the 3-10 Edmonton Elks and 4-9 BC Lions. With the Elks playing this past Tuesday (COVID-19 make-up game) and also the past Saturday, Friday at BC could be a farm team-like roster for them. Given it’s both teams’ final game, the same can be said for both clubs.

Rookie Canadian Nathan Rourke is getting his second career start at quarterback for BC. Then it could be either Taylor Cornelius, Dakota Prukop, or Nick Arbuckle for Edmonton. With Cornelius starting both of Edmonton’s last two games during these past four days, it’s smart to expect one of the other two to play Friday.

Kickoff at BC Place starts at 10:30 p.m. EST.

CFL Odds and Betting

It’s also smart to expect fatigue to catch up to Edmonton after three games in seven days, especially when they sit in the West’s basement. On Thursday the Elks will have their only practice, where both roster announcements and injury news is bound to come.

The saddest statistic about these two non-playoff teams in the West is the Elks and Lions have a combined one home win in 13 games. BC’s just 1-5 at home, losing to the Elks once already who went O-fer in seven home games this season. Edmonton’s now 3-3 on the road in 2021.

Oddsmakers have the Lions as four-point favourites at home with the over-under at 48.5.

Edmonton Elks

It wasn’t pretty, but Edmonton got back into the win column on Tuesday with a 13-7 win. Cornelius, again the winning quarterback, threw for 160 yards to go with no touchdowns and three interceptions. The Elks production came on the ground rather with 163 rushing yards. James Wilder had 56 of those, and Walter Fletcher 55 in what’s become a loaded Elks backfield.

The Elks got a change of pace on defence too as they did enter the game second-last in points allowed. Granted it was against Toronto’s backups but seven points against is a strong showing.

BC Lions

BC’s at home, more rested, and poised to snap their seven-game losing streak before their year’s over. But Michael Reilly’s season is over for BC, ending his 2021 with 3,283 passing yards which heading in Week 16 leads the entire CFL. Team Most Outstanding Player Lucky Whitehead is fourth in the CFL with 840 receiving yards and has missed two games, and then team-leading receiver Bryan Burnham sits in third with 896 yards. Both receivers should suit up.

Defence has failed the Lions down the stretch. They’re now seventh in points against per game (26.2), lead the CFL in first downs allowed (292), and have the fewest sacks (21).
