The Montreal Alouettes made some major changes in their bye week, firing head coach Khari Jones and defensive coordinator Barron Miles following a 1-3 start to the season, which included a 41-20 loss in Saskatchewan on July 2.  The Als, now lead by GM and interim head coach Danny Maciocia, return to action in Week 6 with a home date against the Edmonton Elks.  The Elks sit last in the West Division with a 1-4 record and are coming in off a 49-6 blowout home loss against Calgary last week.

Montreal is favoured to win on the CFL odds.

CFL Odds and Betting

Edmonton has a commanding 12-2 record in the last 14 head-to-heads between these teams, although Montreal won the only meeting last season, 30-13.  The total has gone Over in five of the last seven games between the teams.

The Elks are 2-6 straight up in their last eight road games, including 1-2 SU this season.  They’re 2-3 against the spread this year, but they’ve failed to cover in four of their last five games against Montreal.  The total has gone Over in four of Edmonton’s five games this season, including all three road dates.

Montreal will be banking on home field advantage this week as they’ve won their only other game at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium this year.  They’re a healthy 3-1 ATS on the year, but they’re just 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games against Edmonton.  The total has gone Over in three of the Alouettes’ four games this season.

Edmonton Elks

Edmonton’s home woes continued in last week’s loss to the Stampeders as the Elks haven’t won at Commonwealth Stadium since 2019.  It was a poor-weather game, with the teams forced to leave the field because of heavy rainfall and lightning early in the third quarter.  Edmonton trailed 21-3 at that point and never posed a threat to win.  Rookie Tre Ford became the first Canadian quarterback to start a game for the Elks at Commonwealth Stadium, but left with an injury after completing two of three passes for 52 yards.  Nick Arbuckle completed 13 of 20 passes in relief, throwing for 97 yards and two interceptions.

Versatile rookie Kai Locksley also took snaps under centre, completing five of seven passes for 50 yards.  Locksley added another 61 yards on two catches and 26 yards on three rushes.  Sergio Castillo made two of three field goal attempts and now sits tied for second in the CFL with 13 successful field goal attempts.

The walking wounded for Edmonton this week include Ford, starting running back James Wilder Jr. (shoulder) and defensive lineman Jake Ceresna (undisclosed).  All three players are ruled out against Montreal.  Third-stringer Taylor Cornelius will start at quarterback in Week 6, with Arbuckle traded to Ottawa on Monday night.  Cornelius started eight games for the Elks last year, completing 143 of 247 pass attempts for for 1,795 yards, nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Montreal Alouettes

It’s been a disappointing start to the year for Montreal, with the team now set to be led by GM Maciocia for the rest of the season, following the firing of head coach Jones and defensive coordinator Miles.  The final straw for Jones and Miles came in the Week 4 loss against the Roughriders and one call by Jones specifically stood out.  Leading 13-11 to start the second half, Jones elected to kick-off a second time rather than receive the ball.  That led to a Saskatchewan touchdown that gave the Riders a lead they never relinquished.  The Alouettes were outscored 21-0 in the third quarter.

Veteran Trevor Harris will remain the starting quarterback under Maciocia for the time being.  Harris 18 of 26 pass attempts in Week 4, finishing with 198 yards and two interceptions.  Vernon Adams Jr., who started the season as Montreal’s starting QB, could be an option moving forward.  Both quarterbacks have struggled this season, so they likely each have a fairly short leash.  Harris has thrown for 730 yards (ninth in the CFL) with one touchdown and three interceptions.  Adams has thrown for 294 yards (10th in CFL) with one touchdown and two interceptions.
