The Montreal Alouettes need something, anything really, to generate some excitement about their team this year and word has it they’re looking at former NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Johnson to provide that spark.
According to a TSN report, the Alouettes have added Ochocinco to their negotiation list. Johnson quickly weighed in on the TSN tweet that reported the news by replying “Nothing to negotiate, I’ll be fast as hell and in shape.”
Try not to roll your eyes. Johnson was an elite receiver when he was at his best. He was a six-time NFL Pro Bowler and finished with 766 catches, more than 11,000 receiving yards, and 67 touchdowns in 166 games played.
But he hasn’t played in the NFL since 2011 and wasn’t much more than a decoy with the New England Patriots that year. Johnson had trouble with the Patriots play book and had just 15 catches and one touchdown in 15 games played.
He caught on briefly with the Miami Dolphins the following season but was cut during training camp after he was charged with domestic battery.
Since then Johnson has campaigned for a football job pretty much everywhere you can think of without any bites. By the end of last year, he was working for CBS as a fantasy football analyst.
That said, he claims he’s still in great shape and it’s not like the Als have much to lose kicking the 36-year-old’s tires. Since Marc Trestman left to coach the Chicago Bears and quarterback Anthony Calvillo retired, Montreal doesn’t have much going for it heading into this CFL season.
The Als finished 8-10 last year and are turning over a new leaf this year as Calvillo moves from his starting quarterback spot to a scouting role with the team. Maybe he still sees something in Johnson that could help the club.
Then again, it’s probably a case of latching onto some easy publicity on the back of Johnson’s hot-air soundbites.
