The Canadian team that beat the U.S. 5-1 in the preliminary round in last year’s world championship and then beat them again to win gold in the final, did not look like the same team that took to the ice on Tuesday. The Americans score five unanswered goals to beat the Canadians 5-2.

Next for the US team is No. 3 seeded Hungary.

This year’s Women’s World Championship began August 25, and will run until September 4th, in Frederikshavn and Herning, Denmark.

Canada, now sitting at three wins and a loss, will face off against Pool B runner-up Sweden.

The odds are generally in Canada’s favour when they play any team other than the United States, and Sweden is no exception. The Canadians are comfortable favourites here and oddsmakers expect it to be a one-sided, high-scoring affair for Canada, who’ll probably come into this game frustrated from their loss to the US yesterday.

The Americans made a huge Women’s World Championship statement on Tuesday by ending Canada’s win run of of five games against them, including their wins in the most recent WWC tournament and the Winter Olympic tournament. The final score of 5-2 was the largest margin win over Canada since 2019. Netminder Emerance Maschmeyer stopped 28 shots in the loss.

Sarah Fillier and Ella Shelton each got on the scoreboard for Canada but it wasn’t even close to enough, and the Canadian side seemed at times overrun by the American offence.

“Every time you lose against the U.S., it’s always a sting,” veteran Marie-Philip Poulin said. “No time to panic for us. It’s a game. It’s part of the process. It’s never going to be perfect. It’s just a matter of us being resilient.”

Team Sweden

Sweden comes into this game against Canada as a big underdog after dropping their last preliminary contest against Czechia on Tuesday.

Leading up to that game, Sweden beat Denmark 5-2; they then were victorious over the German team with a final score of 4-3 and followed that up with a 3-2 win over Hungary before getting blanked by the third-seeded Team Czechia.
