Shedeur Sanders
Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Sanders as Cleveland’s starter for their Week 12 road game in Las Vegas as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel remains in concussion protocol.
Sanders, the son of Hall-of-Famer Deion Sanders, began the year as the No. 4 quarterback on the depth chart. He’ll be the 42nd quarterback to start a game for the Browns since the franchise returned to Cleveland in 1999.
The 23-year-old Sanders was selected 144th overall in the 2025 NFL draft. He had his first taste of regular season action last week in the second half of Cleveland’s 23-16 home loss against Baltimore.
Replacing the injured Gabriel against the Ravens, Sanders struggled, completing just four of 16 passes for 47 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He was also sacked twice.
It was a lot to ask of Sanders to be effective last week, with Stefanski confirming those were the first snaps the rookie had taken with the starting offence in any capacity. The Browns are obviously hoping Sanders will look better after a full week of practice with starting unit.
Week 12
Cleveland enters Week 12 on a three-game losing streak, which has dropped the team to 2-8 on the season, good for last place in the AFC North. Luckily, they’re up against a Raiders squad that is also 2-8 and riding a four-game losing skid.
Oddsmakers clearly don’t think Sanders is the answer for the Browns. Cleveland opened as a 3-point underdog against Las Vegas and that number grew to +4 after it was announced Sanders would start.
Still, the Browns weren’t exactly a juggernaut with Gabriel under centre. Cleveland is 1-4 in games Gabriel has started and he has the 32nd ranked QBR (30.9) of 33 qualifying quarterbacks this season.
