Team South Korea

South Korea is third in Group H with one point through two matches and a goal differential of minus-1. The Taegeuk Warriors need a win over Portugal and a Uruguay win or draw with Ghana to remain in contention for the knockout stage. If Uruguay beats Ghana, the second spot in Group H comes down to goal differential between Uruguay and South Korea. If Uruguay and Ghana draw, the second spot comes down to goal differential between Ghana and South Korea. The Koreans drew 0-0 with Uruguay in the opening round then lost 3-2 to Ghana on Monday. In the 53rd minute, South Korea recorded its first shot on target of the tournament, becoming the last team in Qatar to do so.  Cho Gue-Sung had both goals and tied it in the 61st minute, but the Koreans allowed the go-ahead score seven minutes later. Down 2-0, South Korea coach Paulo Bento inserted Lee Kang-in as a substitute and he made an immediate impact as he was involved in both goals. The favoured anytime goalscorer here for South Korea is Heung-min Son at +250.

Team Portugal

Portugal leads Group H with six points and a plus-3 goal differential. Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. have qualified for the knockout round and would win the group with a draw or a win against South Korea. It still could with a loss depending on what happens between Ghana and Uruguay. The Portuguese beat Ghana 3-2 in the opening round and then Uruguay 2-0 on Monday. Bruno Fernandes had both goals in the latter match, including a late penalty shot. But for a last-minute strike that hit the post, Manchester United’s Fernandes would have become the first player to score a hat trick in this tournament. Portugal dominated with 60 per cent possession and 15 shots on goal. It’s the third time at a World Cup that Portugal won successive group-stage matches, the previous two times leading to runs into the semifinals. Ronaldo, incidentally, reportedly has been offered a reported massive contract from Saudi club side Al-Nassr worth more than £100 million a year. Saudi Arabia is hoping to host the 2030 World Cup and having Ronaldo as an ambassador for the sport and in the country’s top league can only help in that regard. Ronaldo is +109 to be an anytime scorer here.
