The match starts at 10pm (ET) tonight – Monday, July 18 – and the teams will face off at the BBVA Bancomer Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico. The winner of this final gets more than just a trophy – they’ll earn a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

This will be the 62nd time that Team Canada and Team USA have played each other, going back to 1986. The Canadians are the American’s most common opponent in their history, and they’ve had the Canadian’s number for most of that history – Team USA leads the overall series 51-3-7.

Both clubs won their groups easily to get to this final matchup, each team scoring 9 goals in the three games played leading up to the semis, without conceding any, and in the semifinals they each won their matches 3-0, and once again, conceded no goals to the rival teams. The Americans had nine different players score goals and the Canadians had eight players find the back of the net. Those two dominant paths to the final should set up a game worth watching.

As mentioned above, this tournament is a vital one, in that in addition to serving as a qualifier for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, it will also decide one of CONCACAF’s two spots to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The winner of tonight’s final will cement their spot in Paris while the loser will have to play the winner of the third place game between Costa Rica and Jamaica to decide who will be the second and final berths at the Olympics.

The No. 1 Americans are the most recent World Cup champions and the No. 6 ranked Canadians are the reigning Olympic gold medalists. This will be the two nations 10th time facing each other in a CONCACAF final. Team USA has the major advantage historically, with an 8-0-1 record in their previous nine meetings.

This is the first meeting since the semifinal of the delayed 2020 Olympics, a match won 1-0 by Canada on a late penalty kick award by VAR.

Team Canada

It was another dominant performance by Team Canada, who outshot Jamaica 18-1 to finish the game with a 3-0 final score, and earning their spot in the CONCACAF final against their biggest rivals, the United States.

Veteran Jessie Fleming scored first in the first half and then two substitutes stepped up in the second half to net one each – with Allysha Chapman and Adriana Leon adding to the final score of 33-0. Canada never looked uncomfortable at any point, and likely would have been able to score a few more goals had it not been for the impressive play of Jamaica’s netminder, Rebecca Spencer, who plays for Tottenham in England.

Because of the lopsided play, Canada’s coach played plenty of players from the bench in the match, which allowed players like Christine Sinclair ample time to rest and prepare for their presumed game against the Americans.

Team USA

The United States of America handily beat Costa Rica 3-0 in the semifinals on Thursday night to set up this predicted battle with rivals Canada. The American side saw goals from three different players –  Emily Sonnett, Mallory Pugh and Ashley Sanchez. In the net for the American side was Casey Murphy, who earned a shut out.

The win helped the American team extend their extremely impressive shutout streak in World Cup or Olympic qualifying matches to 32 games.
