Alphonso Davies

Davies came off the bench in the 88th minute of Bayern’s 3-1 home win over Portuguese champion Sporting Lisbon in Champions League action on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old indicated Monday on the Film Never Lies podcast that he could make an appearance in the match and it would be up to coach Vincent Kompany.

“I’m not sure if I will get minutes,” Davies said. “I mean, that’s up to the coach.”

Davies replaced Serge Gnabry, who opened the scoring in the 65th minute.

It was Davies’ first action since he tore a ligament and sustained other damage in his right knee while playing for Canada in a match against the United States in a CONCACAF Nations League third-place match in March.

The injury drew harsh criticism from Bayern officials, who accused the Canadian national team of overplaying Davies and not giving him a proper medical check before he returned to Germany.

Team Canada

Davies’ return to the pitch gives him just over six months to gear up for the 2026 World Cup as Canada looks to advance past the group stage for the first time ever.

Canada is a +15,000 long shot to win the World Cup, but there is strong optimism they can reach the knockout round.

Currently sitting at No. 27 in the FIFA World Rankings, Canada is in Group B along with No. 17 Switzerland, No. 51 Qatar and the winner of Path A in the European playoffs.

With the World Cup expanding to 48 teams, the top two teams in each group and the eight best third-place teams will advance to the knockout round. That gives Canada a great shot at advancing if they can beat Qatar and draw one of their other two matches.
