Vancouver Whitecaps vs. DC United Betting Odds, Prediction
The best team in the Western Conference hosts one of the worst in MLS on Saturday when DC United visit BC Place to face a Vancouver side that just keeps rolling. The Whitecaps sit first in the West and second overall at 15-4-6 (49 points) after a 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake last time out, a result that pushed Yohei Takaoka to 11 clean sheets and gave Thomas Müller his eighth goal of a strong debut MLS season.
DC United, by contrast, have won just six of 25 games and sit 11th in the East at 6-11-8 (29 points) after falling 2-1 at Charlotte, their third game without a win.
To make matters worse for René Weiler’s club, DC will be without their two leading scorers on Saturday. Tai Baribo (14 goals) has linked up with Israel and Louis Munteanu (six goals) has joined Romania for the September international window, leaving a combined 20 goals out of the lineup against a Vancouver defence that has conceded the fewest goals in the West.
Vancouver Whitecaps vs DC United MLS Odds and Betting Trends
The market has this one lopsided. Vancouver are priced at -400 on the three-way money line, the draw sits at +550, and DC United are +850 road underdogs on the MLS odds board. The total is set at 3.5 goals, with the Over at even money and the Under at -120.
Vancouver have scored 56 goals this season, the most in the Western Conference, while DC have found the back of the net just 31 times in 25 matches, which groups them into one of the five-worst scoring squads in the league. This is the first meeting between the clubs this season.
Vancouver Whitecaps
Brian White has been the engine of Vancouver’s record-setting season, leading the club with 16 goals on 78 shots and putting himself squarely in the Golden Boot and MVP conversation. Müller has added eight goals and multiple assists in his first MLS campaign since leaving Bayern Munich, and the Whitecaps have the league’s best goal differential at +33 (56 scored, 23 allowed) heading into the weekend.
The one concern for Jesper Sørensen is fitness at the margins. Andres Cubas (ankle), Boubacar Halbouni and Kwasi Poku are doubtful for Saturday’s tilt, but luckily captain Ryan Gauld has already returned to full training after briefly missing Wednesday’s practice with a lower-body tweak. None of the four is considered a certain absence, but a home side already missing Sebastian Berhalter to a summer transfer cannot afford to lose much more depth with the playoffs approaching.
DC United
DC’s season has been defined by an inability to turn performances into points, and Saturday’s absences make that problem more acute. Baribo and Munteanu have combined for 20 of the club’s 31 goals this season, and both are away on international duty, leaving João Peglow, the scorer of one of MLS’s best goals this year on a bicycle kick, as the most dangerous attacking option left on the field. Peglow and Keisuke Kurokawa share the team lead with four assists apiece.
Weiler’s side has managed just two wins in their last 10 league games, including back-to-back scoreless draws against Atlanta United and LAFC sandwiched around Saturday’s loss at Charlotte, where captain Lucas Bartlett’s goal wasn’t enough. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson has kept the Black-and-Red competitive with a 69 per cent save rate, but a back line that has already conceded 39 goals will have a difficult night against Vancouver’s attack.
MLS Prediction: Who Will Win Vancouver Whitecaps vs. DC United?
Best bet: Brian White Anytime Goalscorer (-120)
White was priced similarly last weekend against Real Salt Lake and delivered the opener in a 3-0 win. He now gets a DC United defence that has shipped 39 goals this season and will be without any specialist cover for Vancouver’s most in-form scorer. With White up to 16 goals and Vancouver at home chasing the Supporters’ Shield, expect him to test Sean Johnson early and often.
Final score prediction: Vancouver Whitecaps 3 | DC United 0
