Canada Goes 10-0, Wins World Hockey Gold
It’s been eight years since the men’s Canadian National Hockey team won the World Hockey Championship, but Team Canada is able to call themselves champions again after going 10-0 and defeating Russia for the gold medal.
Five straight years of quarter-final losses in the world hockey championship ended last night, in a convincing 6-1 blow out of defending champion Russians. With a deep roster chock full of big names, the Canadians were arguably the deepest team in the tournament and were able to run the table.
Sidney Crosby, Tyler Ennis, Cody Eakin and Claude Giroux all scored for team Canada and each had an assist in the gold medal game as well. Tyler Seguin and Nathan MacKinnon also notched goals for the Canadians. Crosby tallied the most points for the Canadians with 11, becoming only the eighth Canadian player to join the triple gold club that includes his world championship, the 2009 Stanley Cup Championship with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Olympic Gold medals in 2010 and 2014.

Evgeni Malkin had the only goal for Russia, while star forward Alex Ovechkin was unable to find the back of the net. Both Malkin and Ovechkin did all they could to try to bring the Russians back from a deep 4-0 hole heading into the third period of play, but the Canadians just had too much star power. Malkin’s goal came with just seven minutes left to play, making it a cosmetic goal to ruin what could have been Canadian netminder Mike Smith’s third shutout in a row during the tournament.
“In the second period we threw the game away,” said Ovechkin. “We only had one shot. Of course they played really well today, it’s obvious that they’re a good experienced team and they showed it today.”
