Men’s Snowboarding: Slopestyle
What happened to Mark McMorris on Thursday? McMorris arrived at Sochi as one of Canada’s best gold medal prospects, and those prospects got even better when the USA’s Shaun White sensationally withdrew from the slopestyle competition. Instead, McMorris has a bad opening to his campaign at Rosa Khutor, and now has to participate in the semi-finals this morning before he can even qualify for the final.
Charles Reid will also compete in the semi-finals, while Sebastien Toutant and Maxence Parrot have both qualified directly for the slopestyle final later today.

Women’s Hockey
Canada’s women begin their campaign today against Switzerland. The Swiss won a bronze medal in the 2012 World Championships but their Olympic form has been patchy. Canada will hammer them.
The USA play today as well when they face Finland. The Finns and the Swedes are seen as the greatest threat to the American and Canadian dominance of the sport – could they put down a marker today?

Cross Country Skiing
The Cross-Country Skiing begins today with the Ladies’ Skiathlon at the Laura Mountain River on the Psekhako Ridge, fifty miles to the north-west of the town of Sochi itself. The Skiathlon is a challenge of a skier’s versatility – the first half of the race is done on classic skis, and then the second half is completed on skating skis. Classic skis have stiffer boots and shorter poles; skating skis have more flexible boots and much longer poles.
