Rio 2016 Odds: Andre De Grasse eyes Usain Bolt, 200M World Record

After winning the bronze medal in the 100-metre sprint, Canada’s Andre De Grasse’s future looks bright. He might take another step into the spotlight in the 200-metre final at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Andre De Grasse was already the biggest star on Canada’s track and field team. He might leave the Rio 2016 Olympics as one of the biggest track stars in the world.

After winning a bronze medal in the 100 metre sprint, De Grasse now has his sights set on gold in the 200 metre final that goes tonight. Now, while Rio 2016 Olympics odds still have De Grasse still as a huge +1600 underdog to upset current world record holder Usain Bolt, the Canadian certainly seems like Bolt’s biggest threat in this race.

De Grasse easily advanced to the semifinal, then gave Bolt all he could handle. De Grasse continued to chase Bolt to the finish line even though the pair was well in front of the rest of the pack and easily qualified for the final. Bolt finished at 19.78 with De Grasse at 19.80, setting a new Canadian record.

“I don’t think he expected me to do that,” De Grasse told reporters after the race. “I had to push him a little bit, you know, see what he has left in the tank.” I want to push for gold, and even if I don’t get it, I got to push [Bolt] to his potential, his limits and see what he has left.”

Many wonder whether De Grasse might have more left in the tank than he’s letting on too. At just 21 years old, De Grasse likely has the best shot to beat Bolt on Thursday night, but he’s going to have to have the race of his life.

Bolt claims that he thinks he can beat his own world record of 19.19 in the 200 and is out to make a statement before he retires. Olympic odds have Bolt set as a -10000 favourite to win the gold medal.
