Team Canada will be looking to secure a win against Great Britain on Tuesday morning for the top spot in Group E.
The women’s soccer tournament sees its third and final round of group stage play as Team Canada and Team Great Britain face each other early Tuesday morning, with a start time of 7a.m. ET. The two nations top Group E – Great Britain with six points after two wins and Canada with four points from a win against Chile and draw versus Japan.
Canada vs. Great Britain Soccer Odds
The Brits haven’t given up a goal thus far in these games, and are favored to win this matchup against the Canadians.
The Group E winner will potentially find themselves up against Australia, China or Zambia in the next round, and the second place country in the group will have to play Brazil or the Netherlands.
The Canadian Women’s soccer team earned a crucial three points in their win against 37th ranked Chile, and a huge part of that victory was in the stellar play of Nichelle Prince and Janine Beckie.
Beckie scored both Canada goals, after missing a penalty kick, and it was Prince who had the assist on both of them. Canadian fans hope that this momentum continues, turning the tide on the team’s struggle to manufacture scoring chances. It wasn’t a cake walk for the Canadians; Chile was down 2-0 before scoring on a penalty kick in the second half of the match.
Should Canada find a way to beat Great Britain, they’ll win the Group. If they lose, they’ll likely still move on to the next round, as the four points they currently have will put them in a favourable position.
Team Great Britain
Canada will face its greatest test of these Olympic games on Tuesday when they challenge the so far unbeaten Team Great Britain. After dispatching Chile 2-0 in their first matchup, GB earned a 1-0 victory against host country Japan, to put themselves at the top of Group E with six points.
The formidable Ellen White was the playmaker for England in those first two games, scoring all three of Great Britain’s goals. White, who plays for Manchester City, has scored 42 goals across 101 caps in international competition.
A draw or a win on Tuesday will secure this team a first place finish, and an easier quarter-final draw as their prize.
