The United States will be looking to win a mens best-on-best international tournament for the first time since the 1996 World Cup as they ice arguably the best team in the history of the country. Team Finland, on the other hand, is a big tournament underdog thanks to a long list of injuries.

Team USA is a -350 favourite to win on the 4 Nations Face-Off odds, with the total pegged at 6.0.

Team USA vs. Team Finland NHL Betting Odds

There’s a valid argument to be made that the United States should be tournament favourites, so you’re getting a little better value on them at +150 on the 4 Nations Face-Off futures board, compared to Canada at +145. Finland enter as heavy +1000 tournament underdogs, trailing Sweden at +425.

While Team USA has closed the gap with their neighbours to the north, historically the program hasn’t had a ton of success. The United States hasn’t won Olympic gold since the 1980 Miracle on Ice team and they haven’t won a major tournament since the 1996 World Cup. They also finished a disappointing fourth at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the last time NHL participated in best-on-best international hockey.

Finland’s junior teams have experienced success in recent years, so they should be a force in the future, but they lack past success for the senior team. The Finns’ only Olympic gold came in 2022, without NHL participation, although they did win bronze in 1998, 2010 and 2014.

To no one’s surprise, Auston Matthews enters the tournament as a +800 favourite to be the top goal scorer. I’m predicting a Canada-USA final, so I also like the long shot value in taking Jack Hughes to lead the tournament in points at +2200.

I don’t expect Finland to do much damage in this tournament, so I’m focusing on team props. Mikko Rantanen is a little banged up, so I’m circling Aleksander Barkov to lead Finland in points at +450. Rantanen is still a dog around the net, however, so I’ll take him to lead the Finns in goals at +300.

Team USA

Team USA has a deep forward group, but their biggest strength in this tournament is their goaltending. Connor Hellebuyck is almost a lock for the Vezina Trophy this season, leading the NHL in wins (34), goals-against average (2.06), save percentage (.925) and shutouts (six). The main hit the team has taken is the loss of Quinn Hughes on the blue line. However, USA still boasts some of the best blueliners in the tournament, including Adam Fox, Noah Hanifin, Jacob Slavin and more.

The U.S. forward group is stacked. The top line of Jack Eichel, Kyle Connor and Matthew Tkachuk provides a nice blend of skill and grit and the second line of Auston Matthews, Jack Hughes and Jake Guentzel should be able to bury the puck in the back of the net. The depth is what really stands out, as every player on the third and fourth lines is a 30-goal scorer in the NHL.

Team Finland

Finland took a massive hit to their roster with the loss of Dallas defenceman Miro Heiskanen, who underwent knee surgery last week. That leaves a pretty weak top defensive pairing of Esa Lindell and Niko Mikkola. In net, Juuse Saros will be the starter, while Kevin Lankinen backs him up. Saros has struggled with a 2.95 GAA and .895 SV in Nashville this season, so it’s fair to wonder how long of leash he has before Lankinen is put in.

There’s a little bit of familiarity on the top forward line as former Colorado teammates Mikko Rantanen and Artturi Lehkonen will play wing alongside Aleksander Barkov. The real evidence of a lack of depth on this team is how the power play unit has been practicing. The Finns have opted for an almost unheard of strategy of five forwards on their PP1 unit. That screams that they don’t trust their defence or the bottom of the lineup, which means they could be in serious danger of gassing their top players too early.
