The 4 Nations Face-Off game on Monday between Sweden and the USA from Boston means little to the Americans and potentially everything to the Swedes.

Team Sweden vs. Team USA NHL Betting Odds

Monday is the final day of 4 Nations Face-Off round-robin play as the entire event shifts Original Six NHL towns from Montreal to Boston. The championship game is there Thursday night, and the United States already has clinched a spot in that no matter what happens against Sweden. It leads the event with six points through a pair of wins.

The only way Sweden is opposite the USA in that game is that the 1 p.m. ET puck drop between Canada and Finland goes to overtime – it does not matter who wins – and it beats the USA in regulation. The Canadians, Finns and Swedes are all on two points, but Sweden is losing all tiebreakers currently and an overtime win Monday does the country no good.

The United States is now the -165 tournament favourite with Canada +175, Finland +1600 and Sweden +2500.

Team Sweden

The Swedes lost their tournament opener 4-3 to Canada in overtime and then lost 4-3 in OT again to Finland on Saturday. Mika Zibanejad (Rangers), Rasmus Dahlin (Sabres) and Erik Karlsson (Penguins) had the Sweden goals with Karlsson’s giving the country  a 3-2 lead midway through the second, but Linus Ullmark (Senators) gave up the tying marker at 17:05 of the period. Mikael Granlund (Stars) won it at 1:49 of OT. Filip Gustavsson (Wild) has started both games in net for Sweden but was replaced after the first intermission against Finland by Ullmark due to illness. Gustavsson has a 4.19 goals-against average and .813 save per centage in the event compared to 2.88 and .882 for the former Vezina winner Ullmark, and we’d guess he starts this one. Lucas Raymond (three assists) leads the Swedes with three points, while Karlsson and Joel Eriksson Ek (Wild) each have a goal and assist.

Team USA

After blowing out Finland 6-1 in its tournament opener thanks to a big third period, the USA became the first team to clinch a spot in the final with a 3-1 upset of Canada at Bell Centre on Saturday night in a highly charged matchup that featured three fights in the first nine seconds. Brothers Matthew (Panthers) and Brady Tkachuk (Senators) were two of the main instigators and really have been the heart and soul of this club. However, Matthew suffered a lower-body injury in the victory and might get Monday off with Chris Kreider (Rangers) his likely replacement if so. Kreider has been a healthy scratch the first two games. Current Vezina Trophy betting favourite Connor Hellebuyck (Jets) has been stellar in both starts in net, but I wonder if he gets a break Monday since the Americans are in the final regardless. Coach Mike Sullivan (Penguins) also has Jake Oettinger (Stars) and Jeremy Swayman (Bruins) to choose from.
