NHL: New York Rangers at Carolina Hurricanes

The Rangers are one of the most talented teams in the Eastern Conference but have hit a bit of a rough patch of late as they visit the Flyers in a Black Friday matinee.

Rangers vs. Flyers NHL Betting Odds

Even the best NHL teams go through a bit of a mini-slump occasionally in an 82-game regular season and that’s where the Rangers are right now. The Flyers, meanwhile, are on track to miss the playoffs for a fifth straight season and John Tortorella could be the next NHL coach fired this year if things don’t get turned around.

While New York has two of the league’s best goalies in former Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin and ex- Conn Smythe Trophy winner Jonathan Quick, it seems like Philadelphia has been searching for a true No. 1 in net for years and doesn’t have it yet.

Friday marks the first of three regular-season meetings between the Metropolitan Division rivals and the only one in Philadelphia. Last season, the Rangers won three of four meetings. Mika Zibanejad (3G, 2A) led New York with five points, while Artemi Panarin (1G, 3A) and Vincent Trocheck (1G, 3A) had four each. Shesterkin won his three starts with a 2.33 goals-against average and .941 save percentage, while Quick lost his outing, allowing four goals. Travis Konency (2G, 2A) led the Flyers with four points in the series. Samuel Ersson was 1-1-1 with a 3.03 GAA and .882 SV. Carter Hart started the other but is out of the league now.

New York has won six straight games in Philadelphia.

New York Rangers

New York hadn’t lost back-to-back games this season … but has now lost four in a row following a 4-3 defeat at Carolina on Wednesday. You rarely see Blueshirts goalie Igor Shesterkin blow a third-period lead, but he couldn’t hold the 3-2 edge. Shesterkin has been pretty good this season but not as good as backup Jonathan Quick (4-0, 1.85 GAA, .943 SV, two shutouts) and I tend to believe it will be Quick’s turn on Friday.

The Rangers again were without forwards Chris Kreider (9G) and Filip Chytil (4G, 5A) on Wednesday due to injuries, and they are day-to-day. Brett Berard scored his first career NHL goal in the loss and became the 19th different goal scorer for the Rangers this season, tied for the fourth most in the NHL. Former Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox had his 18th assist of the season, which is tied for second among league blueliners. While the Rangers didn’t score first on Wednesday, they are a stellar 10-1-0 when doing so. The over is 4-1 in their past five games.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers got a big and win Wednesday as an underdog in Nashville, 3-2 in overtime, to get to .500. Sean Couturier’s sixth goal of the season at 2:31 of OT was the winner as the Flyers rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first period. Scott Laughton (fourth of season) and Morgan Frost (third) had the other goals with Frost’s tying it with just 12 seconds left in regulation. It was only the fourth win in franchise history when scoring the game-tying goal within the final 15 seconds of regulation. It was Couturier’s seventh career overtime goal to move into solo third place in team history.

But Philly went 0-for-1 on the power play and has just one goal on the man advantage over the past five games. The Flyers have had a bit of a revolving door in net this year, so it’s tough to say who might start this one. Rookie Aleksei Kolosov started against the Preds, but it likely will be 6-foot-8 Ivan Fedotov, who is 3-4-1 with a 3.70 GAA and .874 SV. Philadelphia is 6-14 in its past 20 vs. the Eastern Conference.
